I have confirmed that two horses were euthanized for catastrophic injuries on the same Charles Town card yesterday: 6-year-old Awesome Life went down in the 3rd; 5-year-old Dos Oro in the 7th. Prior to dying in the West Virginia dirt, the two had been whip-raced a collective 61 times.
To those who wager on horseracing, we implore you to reconsider. And ultimately, you hold all the cards – no more bets, no more races; no more races, no more kills. And – no more abusing unformed bodies; no more extreme, relentless confinement; no more whipping; no more drugging and doping; no more buying and selling and trading and dumping. No more auctions, no more kill-buyers, no more transport trucks, no more abattoirs. No more maiming, destroying; pain, suffering. No more.
In a landscape that abounds with other gambling options – casinos, lotteries, real sports involving autonomous human beings – hasn’t the time at long last arrived to let the racing horse be? You, the bettor, have within the capacity for mercy. We ask only that you exercise it. Please. For the horses.
One thousand TB racehorses die in the dirt at tracks every single year and those are the ones we know about. These two sweet horses died of catastrophic injuries….yes, catastrophic injuries. How horribly gruesome yet the pro-racing apologists will post on this blog that horses love to run and need a job. Really, apologists? No horses need to die of catastrophic injuries. Stop the lies and stop the bets.
Mary, the apologists never comment on the 2014 list of confirmed dead racehorses. What can they say to defend the 1,000 deaths – in an unnecessary entertainment industry, no less – and still come off as somewhat human? And like you mentioned those are just the CONFIRMED dead…corroborated by the very industry that used them to the point of breaking them down and ultimately taking their lives. And we know there were more.
And Patrick, thank you once again for your diligent reporting. Every single enslaved racehorse you bring to our attention deserves the recognition you afford them. And to think, some racing jurisdictions claim they don’t know which horses they’ve killed. Their “family members”. They don’t know. They don’t keep track. Unbelievable.
Awesome Life, 2009 dark bay gelding. 40 starts. Broke down, vanned off, DEAD. His owner, Run Horsey Run LLC and trainer Kieron Magee.
Dos Oro, 2010 chestnut gelding. 23 starts. Broke down, vanned off, DEAD. Owner Gavin-Ty Racing, LLC ran him only 4 days apart in June…June 8 at Parx and June 12 at Charles Town. Then his owner and trainer Keisy Cartagena risked his life one last time on July 8. Now the 5 y/o is DEAD. And for what…
Shame on all industry members – the few “kings” and the many “paupers” – who pocket the earnings from the labors of the non-consenting horses. Such staggering depravity.
Mary , you have been alive long enough to remember Ruffian , do you remember she was running when she was euthanized . I do not understand your hatred of race horses .
Ms. Curtis-Olivas, I do NOT understand your inability to grasp a simple concept but maybe a remedial course in comprehension could remedy that, although I doubt it. You state that you do not understand my “hatred of racehorses”. Let me state, once again, that I do NOT hate the horses. I hate the “industry” of horseracing. There is a difference. Got it? If I hated racehorses, I wouldn’t be focused on shutting down an industry that exploits and kills them. Also, I certainly wouldn’t have helped dozens get out of the hell holes where they were being exploited and I wouldn’t currently own four OTTB’s. Anyone, with minimal intelligence, should be able to understand that.
Patrick , “really ” ? You go to drama school this week. I am sorry man this was so over the top , even for you , it made me laugh .Fire and Brimstone that keeps them filling those pews .
Made you laugh, huh? Says it all.
Yes Patrick , it made me laugh , but why did you not allow my other post , you know , the one describing Animal Rights groups ?
One of the saddest realizations is that the equine world has been invaded by some of the most unethical and unfeeling individuals I had never met before. Debra, you don’t deserve to be associated with these incredibly valiant sentient beings who would and do die before they act dishonestly. Shame on you.
The amendment to defund inspection of horsemeat has not been passed. We work to get it into the Senate version and the House version before the final bill is voted on and presented to Pres Obama for signature. AQHA just came out with their bubbly projection of 800,000 new registrations’ forecast. The slaughterphiles drooled and recanted on their promses to vote for the amendment.
We will need everyone fpcused on bringing and keeping the light on these predators and defeating them!
Thank you, janwindsong!…we’re focused and we’ll keep shining that light! And the apologists HATE IT…”ain’t it grand”!
DebraOlivas 78 is either a paid troll or simply ignorant. It really pains me to see all of you compassionate and loving animal activists continue to engage this person. She doesn’t belong here and only distracts from positive collaboration and unity to advocate against the racing industry which most of us agree is inherently wrong to begin with. You can’t fix evil. The evil must be destroyed through legislation little by little.
As for Ms. Olivas, don’t engage her. You are on the defensive most of the time as I read all of the comments. It’s clear Ms. Olivas is a pure instigator. Let’s bring this wonderful resource for truth and exposure, horseracingwrongs, back to its rightful place which is back in the hands of believers for a cause to stop the wrongs!
We are wasting precious time by giving her any more attention. The horses need our attention not this infiltrator.
