4-year-old Regretless, merely reported as “vanned off” in Equibase’s retelling of Saratoga’s 4th yesterday, actually collapsed and died about halfway through the race. Cause of death presently unknown. The colt was being raced for the second time this Saratoga summer, and fourth overall. He was ridden by Christopher DeCarlo, trained by John Toscano Jr, and owned by AG Macher.
This is Saratoga’s sixth dead horse since the meet began – four racing, two training – and third consecutive to simply “collapse” and die. The others – Lavender Road and Sir William Bruce – were also pubescents. This is horseracing.
These horses should not be collapsing and dying like this. Something is very wrong and is causing these horses to drop dead. However, a corrupt business, as racing is, will not do anything about these killings.
Oh yes, the “SPA”…elite racing at its finest. SIX DEAD HORSES this meet, and when did this meet start?…3rd or 4th week of July?
Regretless, RIP. What an unnecessary tragedy.
