Chichita Dead at Finger Lakes

3-year-old Chichita snapped a leg and was killed in Saturday’s 1st race at Finger Lakes, her first under Sal Iorio. Chichita’s five career starts before yesterday, all under Andrew Lakeman:

Finished last of 9 April 11th at Aqueduct, 17 1/2 lengths back
Finished last of 8 May 26th at Belmont, 28 lengths back
Finished 3rd June 5th at Belmont, 37 1/4 lengths back
Finished 9th of 10 June 21st at Belmont, 15 3/4 lengths back
Finished last of 7 June 28th at Belmont, 37 3/4 lengths back

Equine welfare? Conspicuously absent.

  2. It IS sad, Mary Anne Gardner! And horrific, and infuriating, and unnecessary! But don’t lose heart! The racing industry is losing its fan base a little more each year, and the secrets of dead and injured horses the industry used to successfully conceal are not so easily kept anymore!
