2-year-old filly Chica de La Noche was killed in the 7th race at Louisiana Downs Sunday afternoon. This was her first race under trainer Martin Trejo and owner Ana Alvidrez, having been claimed (bought) for $3,500 in January from Hansel Bray (and trainer Kenneth Weeks). Simple chattel, nothing more, nothing less.
Also, Saturday night at Buffalo Raceway, New York recorded its first harness death of the year when Scottie C broke his leg during the 3rd race and was euthanized. The Standardbred was trained and driven by Jacques Beaudoin. NY’s 2014 Death Toll: 12.
Looking at Chica de La Noche’s past performances, this little gray filly ran her first race eleven days BEFORE SHE TURNED TWO-YEARS-OLD. I cannot get my head around that…
RIP little Chica de La Noche. RIP Scottie C.
And the atrocities continue….The lure of hitting the board is just too great.
It is simply outrageous. There are no rules that provide any protection for these unfortunates. Well, none of these fine upstanding owners/trainers will be able to abuse the little filly again.
