Penn National’s 2013 Casualty List

The following were casualties at the Penn National racetrack during the 197-night 2013 meet. Equibase officially confirms 8 dead. Of the 45 horses listed as “broke down” or “vanned off,” 42 have not raced since. A former racing insider and renowned industry expert told me that in her estimation, 90% of the vanned off are euthanized. 42 of 45 is roughly 93%. In other words, it’s a safe bet that Penn National claimed the lives of some 50 horses last year. Just one of the 100-odd tracks operating annually in the U.S.

  1. And the carnage continues…For those that support this sinister industry, you are no friend of the horses because we, as stewards of the horses, must care for ALL horses, not just the ones in our barn.

  2. Penn National, a hell hole of a track. Even the infamous Mike Gill was quoted in the TTimes, regarding the horses that run there…”They’re cheap horses” (the pot calling the kettle black). And of course, that is just how the folks at Penn view their horses…cheap, disposable. And every single horse at that dump deserves a life without pain and anxiety…and most, I fear, will wait for that life that will never come.
