According to the chart for the 7th at Ellis yesterday, Nyquist Frequency “suffered an injury…then was transported off in an equine ambulance.” In fact, the 5-year-old is dead.
In its coverage of the kill, Horse Racing Nation writes, “[Jockey Yedsit] Hazlewood got up without any assistance and came back to ride his last assignment in Saturday’s finale.” Came back to whip another horse, same day. No mourning there, huh?
In addition to Hazlewood, the others responsible for Nyquist’s death: breeder Paul Farr, owner Spencer Kucera, and trainer Pat Clay. Nyquist is at least the 4th racing kill at Ellis this month. Again, that’s just racing; there have likely been others during training or back in the stalls (we’ll know for sure with our FOIA).
I live in the Uk and used to breed Welsh Section B ponies. I have been involved with equines all my life and watch British flat racing. Yes, in the Uk there are deaths of horses but nowhere like the numbers in the USA. I have been shocked when watching American racing how brutal it appears. In this country there are strict rules regarding the use of the whip and other strong rules. perhaps American racing should follow the British rules to reduce the appalling number of deaths on American tracks.
There has to be an end to horse racing. There are to many horses dying and there’s alit around age two and they say there not ready for racing and it’s killing them. But these rich snobs don’t care it’s all about the money!!😡😡
I was in shock that his kill was still up on bloodhorse race replays …when I was awakened in the wee hours of Sunday….and,looked up Saturday race results. I only replayed that particular one,because of horse I was familiar with was in THAT race. This is what they always do,run them until they don’t. This industry is happy when they breakdown….and,then “oh well” not our concern…NEXT. They don’t give a “rat’s ass” about any of them.
Bonnie, thank you for sharing the information. I was searching for the video race replay but somehow didn’t find it, but found this other video about NYQUIST, the sire of NYQUIST FREQUENCY.
It is a tragedy that this industry is rewarded with subsidies to keep it propped up. Not only do they cause fatal injuries to the horses on a routine basis, the breeding farms receive millions of dollars in stud fees.
For example, on just one horse, namely NYQUIST, standing at Darley’s Jonabell Farm, they booked around 160 mares at $40,000 each stud fee for four consecutive years; 2017, 2018, 2019, & 2020. That was the beginning part of his so-called career as a breeding stallion; $40,000 stud fee x 160 mares = $6,400,000 and multiplied by 4 years equals $25,600,000 gross income from NYQUIST.
Who has sympathy for these people who demand public money to prop up their cruelty to horses? Not me!!!!!
Not only do the horses get exploited and injured and killed, but the taxpaying public isn’t getting a fair shake either!
Thank you Bonnie for telling us about the video. I was able to find it in entirety. The poor horse was being pushed to the brink and running first until he wasn’t able to keep up. He was also feeling the whip throughout. At the end an inquiry was posted. While the contenders were standing waiting for their accolades, the horse hearse drives by with several humans on horseback toward the side of the dirt track. It’s just a travesty that this is witnessed and not dismissed.
I saw this breakdown on the bloodhorse race replays. It was horrible ….I couldn’t believe they left it up.
The fact that there was no halt to the day’s “festivities”, no mention of the death of a sentient being, and the jockey just went right on with his next victim pretty much tells you what the racing industry thinks of their “family members”.
