Through a FOIA request to the California Horse Racing Board, I have obtained the following details on some of that state’s kills in 2025 (previous ones here).
Hidden Speed, Aug 24, Los Alamitos R
“Complete, displaced, comminuted fracture of third carpal; complete, displaced fracture of second carpal; complete tears of [multiple] ligaments.” Also: “[multiple] tooth fractures.” Also: “ulcers.” Then this: “Early degenerative changes in the subchondral bone, as seen in this case, are believed to result from repetitive impact trauma during racing or training and may precede fracture development.” Hidden was two years old. Two.
Mirinda, Oct 18, Los Alamitos R
“[Multiple] complete, open, displaced, comminuted fractures; [multiple: I counted 8] complete ligament tears; multiple complete tendon tears; complete tear of fetlock joint capsule.” Also: “osteochondral disease [both forelimbs].” Also, as a “likely incidental finding”: “gastric ulcers.” Mirinda was four years old.
B Ratifyed, Nov 23, Los Alamitos R
“[Multiple] complete, displaced, comminuted fractures; complete tears of [multiple] ligaments.” Also: “fractured tooth, likely trauma.” Also, as an “incidental finding”: “gastric ulcers.” B Ratifyed was two years old.

“Horse hit rail multiple times, went down in tunnel: complete, catastrophic, open, displaced, severely comminuted fracture of P1; complete tears of [multiple] ligaments; complete tear of fetlock joint.” Also: “multiple body wounds.” Also: “osteochondral disease [both forelimbs].” Also, as a “likely incidental finding”: “gastric ulcers.” Chosen was three and coming off his first race.
