Two More Dead Horses at Belmont

A horse was killed – “suffered injury, euthanized” – training at Belmont yesterday. I’d give you his name, but he was so young – two at most – he hadn’t even been christened yet.

The Commission also (just now) reports this for Gerry World at Belmont: “Underwent exploratory laparotomy to correct a large colon volvulus Jun 15; developed laminitis and due to poor prognosis was euthanized Jun 17.” Gerry was three. That poor, poor boy.

Also: For the hell of it, we filed a FOIA in Florida, even though they’ve long since stopped giving us their kills. Over two months later, we received this: “The Commission has reviewed its files and determined that there are no records that are responsive to your request at this time.” Yes, it took them over two months to come up with that.

  1. Agree 100% Wanda! Its appalling that a poor horse would be not named & be in training that then cause their death.

  2. If no responsive records exist, the public deserves to know why. Transparency isn’t optional for a public agency. Sadly, this is 2026.

  3. Horses dying before they even officially open the damn place. Only in horseracing.

  4. This might seem like a minor point in the whole scheme of exploiting horses to literal death for gambling and calling it a “sport” but I think the racing industry should have a rule that all horses entering the grounds of a racetrack and stalled there should have an official name registered with the Jockey Club or the appropriate breed registry.
Horses deserve so much better than the so-called “amazing care” that racehorses receive from their greedy human connections.
