A Kill and a Slew of Injured/Sick at Turfway

This for Last Chance Dance at Turfway Mar 25, according to the Kentucky Racing Commission: “Last Chance Dance was pulled up abruptly near the 3/16 pole and required the assistance of the horse ambulance. It was [then] determined that the mare had suffered a catastrophic injury to her right foreleg and she was humanely euthanized.” The mare in question had turned six the day before.

Also at Turfway: Over the course of just 8 days (Mar 18-28), 41 horses were scratched by the regulatory vet – i.e., their exploiters had every intention of racing them – for being “injured” or “unsound,” another 34 by private vets for being “injured” or “ill,” and 5 horses who were “claimed” (bought) prior to races were subsequently returned to their sellers because they finished said races physically compromised in one way or another.

In addition, say the stewards:

“J David flipped in the gate and was scratched.”

“Pretti Boujee was injured in the paddock and was scratched.”

“Coach Bargatze returned lame and was placed on Vet List.”

“Hometown Bound returned lame and was placed on Vet List.”

“Wadsworth was treated for a post-race heatstroke.”

“Chaos Agent suffered physical distress and was placed on Vet List.”

“Urban Cowgirl returned lame and was placed on Vet List.”

“High End was injured in the paddock and was scratched.”

And finally:

“Mountain Wolf broke awkwardly, hitting the side of the gate and losing the rider; after reviewing the replay, the stewards determined that the horse caused his own trouble.”

  1. Exactly,Wanda. Just think of what the evil, wasteful money spent on horse racing….could do so much Good for practical honorable causes that benefit people and ANIMALS alike!

  2. Horses do not “cause their own trouble” They are reacting to a very stressful environment from previous experiences. Typical reaction to racing`s participants to blame the poor unwilling horses who have no say in what they are forced to do. Only 6 for Last Chance Dance?! We have a mare that is 23 & still gallops around when the weather gets cooler & is windy. Of course never raced. Just ridden around our area.

  3. Lisa, if only…. It’s the whole industry that blames their shit on their victims.

  4. “… The horse caused his own trouble.” I kinda wish I could smack the fool that wrote that.
