Through a FOIA request to the California Horse Racing Board, I have obtained the following details on some of that state’s kills in 2025.

“open fracture”: bone broke through the skin
“comminuted fracture”: bone shattered into multiple pieces
“displaced fracture”: bone snapped out of place

“Complete, displaced, open fractures of MC2, MC3, and MC4.” Acceleray was four.

Dont Fight the Fed, Jan 25, Santa Anita R
“Complete, displaced, open fractures of MC2, MC3, and MC4; suspensory ligament completely torn.” Dont Fight was four.

Brummell, Jan 30, Santa Anita T
“Complete, displaced, comminuted fracture of the humerus; severe, regionally-extensive hemorrhage.” Brummell was two.

Kimberly’s Devil, Feb 15, Los Alamitos R
“Flipped in starting gate, hit head, bleeding from right side and nostril, unable to rise, euthanized.” Final: “extensive cerebral hemorrhage.” Also: “severe osteochondral disease [both front limbs].” Kimberly’s was five.

Search and Destroy, Apr 12, Cal Expo R
“Sudden death after finishing race, cause undetermined.” Search was four.

Wynners Favorite, Jul 13, Los Alamitos S
“103 temp, sweating, toxic – died [next day].” Cause: “severe colitis, sepsis.” Also: “adult roundworms in small intestine.” Wynners was two and being prepped for his first race.

“Severe, chronic pleuropneumonia with pulmonary abscess.” Ellie was two and being prepped for her first race.
