“Unfortunately, things happen when horses run.”

According to the chart for the 3rd at Fair Grounds Mar 14, Guaguarero, although the “winner,” “lost action late” and was subsequently “transported off via ambulance.” Turns out, that “lost action” was a snapped ankle and, well, I’ll let the Thoroughbred Daily News take it from there: “Somehow, well in front of the field at the time, [Guaguarero] managed to stagger across the wire still in front and was declared the winner. But he was euthanized after the race.” Dead, at five.

You may be wondering why the TDN was reporting on a kill in a claiming race at a second-tier track. Well, this was Guaguarero’s first race since Jan of last year, and in between he had been Vet-listed twice in California, most recently after being “scratched” this past Jan 15. So what did owner Greg Avery and trainer Steve Sherman do? They shipped Guaguarero to Louisiana – a state which does not “reciprocate” when it comes to Vet Lists. And yes, he was on the CA Vet List for the same leg that eventually broke.

In response, Guaguarero’s exploiters say he had four workouts at Fair Grounds prior to Mar 14 with nary an issue. Sherman: “As far as I could tell, everything was fine with the horse. Unfortunately, things happen when horses run. I know this thing doesn’t look great, but the horse was not in poor condition, and I stand by that.”

“Unfortunately, things happen when horses run.” Yup, thousands of ’em.

  1. I saw red and felt rage when I read this poor horse’s story on the TDN site. Just another reason to really hate the racing industry.

  2. The human being, and morally depraved scum of the earth, Steve Sherman, is guilty as sin and yet has an attitude of “my shit smells like something from heaven, because I can do no wrong.”
Sherman is guilty of egregious cruelty and has the complete absence of morals by not only shipping an injured horse to Louisiana, the lowest form of scumbag hell on earth, to race but also acting innocent of deliberately forcing an injured horse to run to the point of fatal injuries.
The Federal Trade Commission and the agencies that act as drug task forces should be able to go to the racetracks in Louisiana and expose these die-hard criminals of doping horses with illegal use of legal drugs and the use of illegal drugs on horses as Performance Enhancing Drugs!
Louisiana is the state that absolutely does not have a moral conscience when it comes to protecting horses from unimaginable abuse and suffering.
When jockeys use illegal hand-held electrical shocking devices in another state and are caught, they are suspended for years but they are welcome in Louisiana.
“Trainers” can break the HISA doping rules in another state and be suspended by HISA rules but they are welcome in Louisiana.
Louisiana enables the worst people in horseracing. This is an outrageous violation of everything that is moral.

  3. Its a known fact if a horse has not received proper conditioning for many months, all previous conditioning is lost & your starting out from scratch again. Goodness only knows what type of med.s he was on. As we recall Louisiana is a state with minimal regulations just like our state, Oregon, does not participate in the rules of HISA such as they are. Staggering across the finish line to his death! Abominable & barbaric! He should have lived another 20 years like the chestnut gelding in our backyard who at 21 can still gallop at top speed! Always have to listen for those fast hooves!
