Tropical Racing posted the following after one of their horses, Time for America, “won” a race at Laurel Feb 27: “Tongue out like he’s tasting victory. Congratulations to [trainer] Michelle Nihei and the team.” Here is what that “tongue out like he’s tasting victory” looked like (watch to the end). Not that it matters, but Time for America is but two, and this was his very first race. By the way, the win netted Tropical/Nihei a cool $28K, which, along with simple depravity, helps explain the it’s-all-fun-and-games post.

Oh I know Wanda, I was just hoping to see what he would come up with, since it’s all been disproven but basically everyone does it because that’s the way it’s always been done
Marie, pardon me but I don’t think Alexander Triozzi knows what to say except what he has been told by the racing industry people. The racing industry people would say the exact opposite of what Dr. Robert Cook says about the use of bits and tongue ties as I am certain you already know much like Dr. Lawrence (Larry) Bramlage advocating for the (abuse) forcing of very young and underdeveloped colts and fillies saying the exact opposite of the truth.
I thought politics was a no-no on this platform – not everything that happens – or doesn’t – is the fault of the current administration. I don’t remember all the complaining when previous Prezzies were in power…………
Hi Alexander, can you educate us on how that is the case?
Thank you for writing, Rutherford, and also for pointing out the callousness/ignorance of the S.C. mascot.
You want to know what would force this industry to die? Losing all their slave labor of stall workers and exercise riders.Wonder how many kickbacks and payoffs and political contributions were made for this current administration to look other way…when it comes to undocumented? 🤔 I thought illegals was trumps whole thing?….FOLLOW the money🤮
WHEN/IF this young and underdeveloped horse breaks down catastrophically, it would not be surprising to hear a sociopathic thug say that the horse is “tasting the agony of defeat” while the horse is doing a nose dive into the dirt due to a broken leg, followed by a sadistic laugh, followed by a social media blitz of “thoughts and prayers” as if it is “normal” for the owners and the trainers to prioritize running the horse to death over the health and longevity of the horse.
It “happens all the time” that these greedy sociopathic owners and trainers repeat the same behavior by sending out their next equine victim to be fatally injured on the racetrack.
Between roughly 2–5 years old, horses undergo major dental changes. Baby teeth are shed, permanent incisors and premolars emerge, and caps (retained baby teeth) may loosen. Irritation from this process can cause tongue protrusion. If the horse has begun bitted work, the tongue may be used to relieve pressure from the bit and reposition the bit in the mouth to avoid contact with the bars or palate. When a racehorse hangs its tongue out while racing, the most common reason is related to the airway and tongue position during intense exertion. At racing speed, a horse’s respiratory system works at maximum capacity, which is one breath per stride. The tongue plays a role in stabilizing tissues at the back of the mouth and throat. Some horses protrude the tongue because it helps open the airway slightly. It reduces pressure on the soft palate and stabilizes the larynx and tongue base. Racehorses run with a bit in their mouths. Because tongue position affects the airway, many trainers use tongue ties, a strap that holds the tongue down, to prevent it from moving backward and obstructing airflow. These are common in Thoroughbred racing for horses prone to airway issues. It can cause the horse to shift the tongue out to relieve pressure or reposition the bit. Certain horses have large tongues and/or smaller oral cavities. This can make tongue protrusion more likely during extreme exertion. In racehorses, tongue hanging out is usually about breathing efficiency or bit pressure. The remark that a horse with his tongue hanging out is “tasting victory” should not be treated as humor. It misrepresents what is actually a serious physiological response to extreme exertion among other considerations especially for a 2 year old. “Tasting victory ” is tasteless comment. I am not amused.
A warm welcome to Alexander, another completely ignorant yet brazenly obnoxious racing defender who has no more empathy toward the suffering of horses than he would looking at a soda can crushed in a landfill and, as evidenced by his eloquent use of the f-word to defend his position, no practical working knowledge of the damaging affects of the torture devices used in the racing industry on a regular basis. Bravo, Alexander, you are the living embodiment of the saying: “It is better to have people think you a fool than to open your mouth and erase all doubt”.
I read every issue of this and Wanda, Fred, Joan, and the other frequent commentaries are all always spot on with information. Others just don’t care to see it for what it is. Like the big college mascot for “the gamecocks” . Look closely and you can see the mascot is even wearing the razor blade spurs mean to kill with . I have written to the college with no avail. I left standard bred racing in the 70’s when the abuse, drugging, and race fixing started to be very apparent. If you must race horses for money, let them naturally run the dam circle without a rider or driver with a whip, drugs, and abuse. Standard bred pacers are forced to not run a natural gate. Thanks to you all I hope there is an end to soon.
What was your first clue that they do this all the time, Alexander Triozzi?
Racing horses to death happens all the time as well, you genius.
To the fucking idiot above – they do it all the time you fucking moron – the horse runs with more ease and safety
These morally depraved morons don’t seem to know abuse of a horse when they see it. It’s obvious they don’t care about treating a horse properly. A horse’s tongue should never be hanging out of his mouth because some morally depraved human beings took the horse’s control over his own tongue away from him.
Being not that smart about what is proper treatment of a horse appears to be a “requirement” for racing industry thugs to be “licensed” as racing industry thugs.
