Two More Weekend Kills in California, Both at Santa Anita

The CHRB has confirmed two more kills (that makes three) from over the weekend: Angelic Appeal, in the 7th race at Santa Anita Saturday; Cornhuskerchris, during morning training at that same track yesterday. The former is no surprise, given the “sustained injury, transported off via ambulance” chart note – a combination that almost always translates to dead. Angelic had just turned six; Cornhusker was three.

  1. Whoever the individuals are who labeled themselves “the blue ribbon nominating committee” when the Horseracing Integrity and Safety Authority was being formed and the website was relatively new, most likely have some stock in Palantir as well.

  2. Through a partnership announced in December 2023, Palantir tools have helped HISA to create models that efficiently identify horses that may be at risk of injury.

Yet unsound racehorses under HISAs watch continue to show up in the saddling paddock every day and even snap legs at the same frequency as before, it seems the American taxpayers were sold snake oil and are owed a full refund or at least an explanation.

  3. The OC register is reporting that California horses are breaking down at the highest pace since 2020.
The CHRB should soon be copy and pasting the statement about how they will take steps to improve safety.

  4. Three dead in a weekend and we’re still calling this “sport.” This is the business model: run them until they break, write a euphemism (“transported off via ambulance”), and wait for the next name to add to the list. One was three years old. Three. Barely more than a baby, already used up and disposed of. If any other industry killed this many young animals this routinely, it would be shut down.

  5. Trafficked from Ireland, ANGELIC APPEAL was born January 23, 2020. She was raced in Europe in 2023. There are no races listed for her in 2024 at all.
She was raced at Del Mar in 2025. Her death race on January 24, 2026 was on the turf at Santa Anita.
She was raced a total of eight times before she was sent out to die in her ninth race. Her earnings for her exploiters was $500 in her last race.
