A Kill at Belmont; HW Protests Bull-Riding

The NYS Gaming Commission reports this for M J’s Yoshida at Belmont Monday: “fell outside her barn resulting in hind-leg paralysis, euthanized due to poor prognosis.” She was three years old and being prepped for her sixth race.

Also, we at HW (like the vast majority of you) speak against all the evils perpetrated against innocent, defenseless animals – no matter the species, no matter the industry. This past Saturday, a group of us activists protested the annual “Professional Bull Riders” show in Albany, and Nicole was interviewed by the local CBS affiliate. For those who may be unfamiliar with the cruelties of bull-riding, here are brief overviews from the RSPCA and the Vancouver Humane Society. As for rodeos in general, here is a statement from renowned vet Peggy Larson. In short, she says, “rodeo events are inherently inhumane.”

  1. We have quit using vendors/ suppliers who support or are sponsors of rodeos of any kind or type. Another cruel & inhumane business! Always like it when the bucking strap comes off & the bull or horse just wanders around the arena! Shows the horse or cow bucks only because of the pain and discomfort caused from the stress. Unfortunately we live in a BIG rodeo state here in Oregon. St. Paul, Pendleton, Prineville ,etc.

  2. If the filly paralyzed both hind legs, it was perhaps a spinal injury? How horrific. And thank you HW for protesting the bull riding. I have never actually watched a rodeo or bull riding event, but I have seen it occasionally as part of a movie or tv show or something. It looks like a particularly stupid pursuit, designed for the riders to look tough and macho.

  3. Regarding the filly that fell down in front of her stall, M J’S YOSHIDA, why did she fall?
    What caused her to fall?
Was she suffering from something resembling paralysis before she fell, but they just shortened the whole story to say she fell and suffered paralysis after the fall…?
What is the whole story? Horses don’t fall for no reason!
What did they do to her to cause her to fall? That sucks so much!

Rodeos are basically a celebration of abusing cattle and horses like there’s no tomorrow.
They advertised rodeo as America’s number one sport several years ago. That sounded very questionable to me because baseball, football, and basketball are sports that so many more people have heard of than rodeo.
Rodeo needs sponsors to keep them propped up. It is sickening that they celebrate their skills in abusing cattle and horses like they think it’s so cool.
Another thing is that some people involved in rodeos do blatant-in-your-face-cheating to supposedly win. It’s so phony in some cases that the contestant could just order a trophy from the supplier and have their name engraved on it saying that they are the champion whatever-whatever. It is beneath an average person’s dignity.
