Video of Breakdown at Penn

A clip of 4-year-old Awesome Harry at Penn Thursday. The chart said, “sustained injury, transported off in ambulance.” Dead? Probably. We’ll know for sure in short time.

  1. The state of Pennsylvania should concentrate more on their needs like the Septa issue in Philadelphia and with crime, social issues , etc. needing major help and solutions. Instead, monies going to an abusive, sickening money losing barbaric industry that needs closure sooner rather than later. Please Pennsylvania take those subsidies and use them for the betterment of your big cities and state rather than sad endings for beautiful creatures at these tracks.

  2. Jdoe, I totally agree that it is definitely not a stretch of the imagination to suspect that AWESOME HARRY had an obvious sign that would have caused him to be scratched by a more honest track veterinarian.
But, this is a subsidized racetrack. Their highest priority is keeping that gravy train going. They just want to fill the card and cater to the owners and trainers who just don’t care about the horses as sentient beings.

  3. This is the cruelest(and most painful for the animal) part of American horse racing.
Over a period of time, they literally run the claimers into the ground.
The deal with the devil is when the trainer and vet say “he is perfectly sound”.
If a cheap claimer has gone off form and breaks down at the back of the pack we can say with certainty that the horse was not 100% yet they chose to run him anyway for a few hundred bucks…..

  4. After the damage was done, at least the jockey didn’t try to ride him as long as he possibly could. This industry is inhumane.
It is inherently cruel to ride young and underdeveloped colts and fillies to inevitable breakdowns. Their bodies are still growing but being abused by demanding that they perform as gambling chips causes all kinds of internal injuries.

  5. That poor horse! We have a 20 year old who can still gallop just fine. Most horses are smart enough not to gallop hard on frozen ground conditions. Clearly can see snow or frozen conditions on the inside of track rail. When temp.s are below freezing a horse should never be forced to work hard enough to breath in deeply that cold air as it can damage airways. Grotesque industry to allow such a young horse not to be able to live another 20+ years.

  6. I hope they didn’t make him leave the track without being put down first.
It looks like his leg was flopping. I’m not sure why, with transparency being the buzz word in the racing world nowadays, they can’t just admit a euthanization in the charts anymore. Just another one of their lies- “transparency”.
