2-Year-Old Killed at Keeneland; Condolences to Those Responsible

According to the chart for the 6th at Keeneland yesterday, Gotta Lotta Tempo “sustained an injury, fell, and was transported off in an ambulance.” The track followed with this:

“There was an incident…involving Gotta Lotta Tempo and jockey Tyler Gaffalione. Both were immediately attended to on-track. Due to the severity of the injury, humane euthanasia was elected in the best interest of the horse. Tyler Gaffalione was evaluated by UKHC medical staff and cleared to ride.”

That’s right, Gaffalione was cleared to continue his whipping ways; in fact, he was back at it in the very next race – and three more after that. Keeneland closed thus: “We express our sincere condolences to the connections of Gotta Lotta Tempo.”

Condolences to the “connections” – or the very people who, along with those who financially support (bettors, patrons, viewers) U.S. Racing, are responsible for this poor girl’s death (including the aforementioned Gaffalione). Vile, but no more than these reader comments on one of the racing rags:

“That is just so terribly sad… A 2 yr. old baby girl, gone before she really even had a chance to live. Hope you rest peacefully, little one. At least that.”

“All deaths are terrible. But when it happens in a 2yo’s debut, it’s horrifying.”

“RIP, poor filly.”

What more is there left to say?

  1. Jockeys use whips because it is a part of racing. That is not an opinion. Also not an opinion is the fact that jockeys overuse the whip breaking the whipping rules established by the state racing commissions.
If you, Big Ben, think that it is nothing to be whipped, let someone tie you to a post and let them whip your flesh repeatedly and see how it feels. Then if you think that is nothing run as fast as you can for as long as you can until you can’t run anymore. Your frenemies can make bets on how much torture you can take.
You obviously have no empathy or compassion for sentient beings.

  2. Horses die everyday and thats the risk of racing. And saying whipping ways is such an opinionated take.

  3. Nancy, we once thought of relocating to Kentucky because of our love of horses. We found it was better to make our farms founders dream here in Oregon. The founder of this farm had extensive experience with horses starting as an 8 year old in Montclair N.J. Cielo how sad that his name means heaven & he never had that here in real life.

  4. For those of you who aren’t familiar with Keeneland, they only race April and October. Twelve horses started in race 1 only 11 over the finish line. Cielo which means heaven by the way was #8. Replay I found after several attempts conveniently deleted any incident of horror. Sickening. Nice going Kentucky.

  5. Marie same sale as well as same sire. $35,000 was auction price. Seems to us that sire may have foal soundness problems being inherited.

  6. Thanks for your confirmation ,Marie. We just hate these 2 year old despicable races! Noticed also that almost all horses owners get paid a minimum of $1062 for running.

  7. With the 4th race video-casting has resumed. They have to hide those young horses breakdowns! Hope someone else recorded it.

  8. Fred and Joan- Cielo had a horrible accident, it sounds like, and is confirmed euthanized.
Weirdly- another 2 yo by the same stallion as this poor baby.

  9. Just looked up the horse that just broke down, Cielo. Another 2 year old today!! Sold for $50,000 at Keeneland last Sept. Another colt who did not get a chance of a decent equine life. Chart says ambulance off. We all know what that most likely means. We`re so sad that another young colt was injured for this industry. We have not seen a live breakdown in many years as we have not been to any track since 2004. We still view races on U- Tube as 1 needs to see & know what the enemy of horses is up to.

  10. We were just watching the 1st race at Keeneland & the U-Tube video cast was cut off after a what must have been a major breakdown in the stretch! Before the video was cutoff saw the rider thrown in front of the poor horse collapsing. Perhaps if enough people see these breakdowns live in front of them, our hope is people will realize how this industry is just ” Crooked,Crummy,Gamboling Game” as was told to us by an English born & trained jockey in 1986 who we used to gallop horses with in the am at Lone Oak Park in Salem, Oregon.

  11. They are serial killers of innocent sentient beings at Keeneland and proud of it. They say the obligatory words as though the abuse they inflict and the fatal injuries they cause to underdeveloped two-year-old Thoroughbreds is not their crime. They are disgustingly morally depraved people at Keeneland. I despise their actions and their self-righteous arrogance!
