This Video of Warm Springs’ Final Moments Is Heartbreaking

As we reported Tuesday, 2-year-old Warm Springs was killed Saturday night at Los Alamitos. As mentioned, Warm had “won” the race then died. While details will have to wait till our FOIA, we captured this video of the poor girl obviously limping toward the “Winner’s Circle” – with the jockey (Armando Cervantes) “urging” and another pulling.

Thank you to Bailey Chapman, our communications director, for producing this. It is heartbreaking.

  1. That was both a sad and disgusting display of animal abuse.
Forcing an injured horse to carry one of her abusers to the so called winner’s circle so a bunch of losers could smile for the camera is incomprehensible to normal people.
Warm Springs you didn’t stand a chance in the hands of these bruits.

  2. If you look at her race results on Equibase, her speed index starts out low and gradually increases to a higher number in each race. Her speed index was 91 in this last race. My take on this is that she was doped with performance enhancing drugs to boost her performance in each successive race. I will be shocked if they do a toxicology report along with a necropsy.

  3. I just want to add a hundred f bombs. Pathetic. How do they get away with this?

  4. This is a comment from another source but I totally agree with this assessment of the jockey: “piece of shit just wants his photo taken in the winner’s circle”. He keeps hitting her with his whip to keep walking towards the winner’s circle.
Armando Cervantes, the morally depraved jockey, should be charged with Animal Cruelty right along with the owner, the trainer, the veterinarians that passed her to race, and the owner of Los Alamitos racecourse, Ed Allred and company.

  5. This poor girl. You could see her ears were down and she was in pain every step of the way while she was dragged to try to make her appearance with her masters in the circle. Makes me more and more sick every day. And I share my feelings with every horse racing enthusiast I know. Keep going Patrick. You are wearing them down!!!!

  6. Its events like this had us quit racing in 2004 & never going back to any track ever again! Lethal Grande was a horse that earned many $$ here in the NW & like this filly was raced until his breaking down & death. This is so sad. RIP Warm Springs. A beautiful chestnut filly who deserved better! This has us teared up as well.

  7. Thank you for sharing this video. It’s disgusting that these people routinely run horses to the point of exhaustion, injuries, and death.
This type of mistreatment of a young and underdeveloped filly defies everything that you learn growing up with equines; it defies everything that is normal to run them to the point of complete exhaustion.
Running your horse is one thing but to expect an underdeveloped two-year-old to run like a fully matured horse is just stupid besides absolutely cruel.
That jockey did not seem to care that his mount was not acting normally. Too little, too late, but at least he could have jumped off sooner.
This egregious mistreatment of horses cannot end soon enough!

These people should be charged with abuse of an underdeveloped filly and prosecuted for violations of the Animal Welfare laws in the State of California. I know — Fat chance that these animal abusing thugs will actually be charged with anything let alone the full scope of what they have done that caused the death of this young, underdeveloped filly.

  8. That brought tears to my eyes.
It hurt my heart watching her get dragged and disregarded for struggling to walk when watching the replay, but it’s even sadder now. I know fellow reader Nancy noticed it also.
I will be curious what her necropsy will show.
