With Kill Yesterday, Saratoga’s Summer Death Toll Now at 15

State of Readiness was killed in the 10th race at Saratoga yesterday – “multiple inoperable fractures, euthanized on the track.” (The 4-year-old may not be the only casualty at Saratoga yesterday as three other horses had to be carted off via ambulance.)

In its write-up on the above, the Thoroughbred Daily News closed with this: “Officials at NYRA confirmed State of Readiness is the third racing fatality of the summer meet, which began July 10. There have also been two training fatalities this summer.” In fact, there have now been 15 deaths at Saratoga this summer:

Racine, Jun 2 – “developed 104 fever May 29, euthanized Jun 2” (two years old)
Term Structure, Jun 4 (euth Jun 14) – “euthanized due to a training injury”

  1. Wanda, We remember when the Arabian industry collapsed here in Oregon in the late 1980`s. The Thoroughbred industry is now collapsing here on the west coast. Same with Shetland ponies! Very sad where most of these sentient horses went!! Were anti-slaughter & vegan! There needs to be no shipping to slaughter of all equines enacted in our country! If other countries want equines for meat, let them raise their own!

  2. I watch Spectrum News Channel 6, the Albany/Hudson Valley channel. They are pushing Saratoga horse racing, like I didn’t see them do before. We activists are scaring the horse racing fiends. When they’ve seen other tracks close, theirs might, too, hope so..

  3. Yes, thank you, Fred and Joan. I don’t keep up with the practice of a breeder putting a horse through a horse sale and someone bids the horse up to a relatively high price, BUT NO ACTUAL MONEY CHANGES HANDS, and the breeder takes the “sold” horse home back to the farm, AND the auction house or sale yard reports the horse as having “Sold for $$$$$$”, whatever ridiculously high amount the horse was BID up to.
This type of thing happened in the Shetland pony market way back when a certain Shetland stallion was reported to have sold for $50,000 in the 1940s, I believe. There were articles written that it is profitable to raise Shetland ponies. This was a thing in the 1950s and the bottom fell out of the market in 1963. The supply exceeded the demand. This practice was also a thing in the Arabian world in the 1980s, I believe it was.
Nothing like creating a “market” for your “product” by falsifying reality.

  4. Wanda, agree 100% about the lies & manipulation of #`s! This is done by breeders & sales companies too.

  5. How many racing fans know what liars they are at the New York Racing Association as well as at the ‘Thoroughbred Daily News’ racing industry publication???
It stands to reason that at least some of the people involved in the racing and gambling somehow know what’s going on at the NYRA racetracks and how many horses have been killed by the racing industry there in June and July and August of 2025.
It stands to reason that at least some of these certain people would wonder “what the ****?!” at the DISCREPANCIES in the number of horses killed when the racing press reports a different number of horses killed than the actual number of horses killed.
It is absolutely unacceptable to abuse horses to death but it is also unacceptable to lie and manipulate the numbers by refusing to count the horses they killed in June. It is also unacceptable to refuse to count all of the horses they have killed at NYRA racetracks in July and August as well.
Does anyone who places bets on horses at these racetracks ever think that since they are being lied to about the true number of horses catastrophically injured and killed at NYRA racetracks, that they might also be taken for fools when it comes to the chances of any given horse’s chances of “winning” races???
How many people who participate in gambling on horses stop to think of how if the people at the NYRA and TDN are willing to sweep the true number of horses killed by this abominable industry under the proverbial rug, then how much information is false regarding the condition, etc. of any given horse being put out there as a four-legged gambling chip???

  6. I am heartened to hear that the crowds are down and that the Albany newspaper reports on the dead horses. So much for the chi chi Saratoga meet. Any elaborate facade.

  7. Rock Harbor and Bunny Honey race 8, Benedetta race 9, State of Readiness and Dormello race 10. Nice going Saratoga. Sickening.

  8. From what I have seen, the turnout at Saratoga has been pretty poor on some days. Hopefully whoever did actually go yesterday was disgusted by what they saw. Saratoga’s horrific day has certainly made the racing sites. Saratoga itself was so embarrassed by it that they deleted 2 of the replays. Kudos to all the people that will be there supporting the protest for Travers Day.

  9. And the local paper, the Albany Times Union continues to report on these euthanized horses. Kudos to them!
