Saratoga Race Course Averages 15 Kills Per Summer

A reminder, as the most-celebrated meet in the country begins…

Saratoga Race Course proudly bills itself “the oldest sporting venue in the nation” – one of the more blatant manifestations of The Big Lie. What you won’t see in all their slick marketing, however, is the cost – a cost, that is, measured in lives. Follows is a list of the horses killed at Saratoga since 2009. Remember, these are just the ones reported. Not reflected here are those euthanized off-site (for Saratoga-related injuries), nor the hundreds (probably thousands) more who raced at Saratoga and were eventually sent to slaughter once the industry was done with them. In short, this is an incomplete reckoning. (The killing, of course, is but one of the racing evils; the others, here.)

(Note: Saratoga hosted the Belmont Stakes last month and has been stabling and training horses since the spring. As a consequence, the killing in 2025 has already begun, with six, yes six, dead horses so far – one more than all of last year. Safer racing is here, folks.)

  1. Sadly, Nancy it truly does not end in all facets of the equine business. Deaths, cruelty, devastating injuries, etc.

  2. Marie,I was wondering when that would be brought up….it(Saratoga) looked EMPTY 😹

  3. Saratoga doesn’t look very busy today. I find that interesting for a “boutique” meet and an upper tier track.
Horse racing really is on the way out.

  4. Patrick, once again thanks to you and Wanda for reminding us that no matter the venue, horseracing is cruel and inhumane and has no place in a civilized society.

  5. First race at Saratoga, Grace Reformed dropped the jockey after incident with another horse. They claim she is ok. Jockey ended up in hospital who is the son of jockey Elliott. Also heartbreaking news as of last night, Patches O’Houlihan, the reigning horse in Canada euthanized from his injury a few days ago. It just NEVER ends, does it..

  6. Maybe they should change the lyrics on your so vain?

Well I hear you went up to Saratoga
    And your horse, painfully, died.

  7. Patrick, thank you for your time, effort, diligence and fortitude in gathering the details and reporting on the reality of horseracing and the names of horses killed including ones who were not named.
People have a responsibility to not allow themselves to be deceived by con artists and grifters and I believe it is true that the horseracing industry is full of con artists and grifters.
