Update: Belmont Now at Four Training Kills in Six Days

Last evening, I posted on the third training kill at Belmont Park in less than a week. This morning, I find that the Gaming Commission has updated on another horse who “experienced an injury” training at Belmont Sunday – dead. The victim: 7-year-old Secret Rules. Complicit in the kill (among others): owner/trainer Rudy Rodriguez.

When is enough enough, America?

  1. Patrick, exemplary question that needs an immediate answer. When will general society demand action? Thousands of horses are being abused in the carriage trade, heritage horses of the American West are being murdered by helicopter pilots chasing them into exhaustion, Australia allows their mustangs to be executed by high-powered rifles, Canada is the villain the pipelines horses to Asian slaughter houses, to name but just a few of the many ways horses are being exterminated.

    America owes a great and unrepayable debt to horses and this is how a nation appreciates the animal that tamed the west, pulled trolley cars so laborers wouldn’t have to walk to work, plowed their fields, carried the mail, delivered children safely to school and to church, who carried their soldiers into battle, pulled the ambulances out of the danger zones, etc. etc. etc.

    When indeed will the America and the world stop being willfully obtuse and do the fight to end the deliberate harm and injury of horses and other animals that need our intervention and protection?

  2. There is a saying that I’m sure you’ve heard and it appears to apply here, “It’s not what you know, it’s WHO you know.”
    Doesn’t Rudy Rodriguez deal in mostly claiming horses? The industry calls for racing horses into the ground anyway so it’s like what difference does it make to the people in charge of filling the race cards? The veterinarians are most likely being paid to pass horses to race that should be retired to a sanctuary. In this industry, the majority of unwanted horses that can’t race anymore would be and are retired to the slaughter pipeline.
