The CHRB reports that one day before Give Me the Lute was killed at Los Alamitos, Lady Derby “collapsed while cooling out” (post race) there – “sudden death.” That would be “sudden death” at the age of six – which is right about the time horses reach full maturity. This brings the total carnage at Los Alamitos this year to 38. 38 dead athletes, at one arena, in one 11+ month period. A sport? Only to the willfully ignorant and/or wicked.
But that’s not all. The CHRB also disclosed a death at Santa Anita Sunday. This particular victim was so young he/she hadn’t even been christened yet. With these three from the weekend, the state of California has now officially surpassed the century mark in dead racehorses in 2024. So much for all that safety and welfare talk.

In West Virginia, a racehorse owner has been charged with 12 counts of Animal Cruelty. Wilfrido Montano was arrested and is being held in the Northern Regional Jail. Six horses were being neglected and deprived of water, food and medical care. The six horses were seized. The news article states that it’s unclear whether these six horses were raced, but Wilfrido Montano has raced Thoroughbreds at Mountaineer Racetrack & Casino.
I wonder if the State Racing Commission will acknowledge that this person is making them look bad???
Does anyone at the Jockey Club even know about this, let alone care???
Pushing for Los Alamitos Racecourse to be shutdown in 2025 sounds reasonable to me! I sincerely hope many others agree.
This willful killing of racehorses is not socially acceptable to how many people? I’m thinking thousands of people would be relieved to see the California Horse Racing Board do something as responsible as closing Los Alamitos.
However, shutting down one more horse-killing, horse-meat-grinder racetrack isn’t something they are glad to do. There is no amount of bullshit or smoke and mirrors that any of these racing industry people can come up with that is going to stop the torture and killing of Thoroughbreds or Quarter Horses.
According to the City News Service, Lady Derby finished 6th or 7th in all 6 of her career races. She collapsed after race 7. It gets more pathetic each day. She wasn’t one of the winner’s circle best bets. Sad sad sad
