Nebraska: “Crashed Into Rail, Bled-Out Both Nostrils, Died”

In a FOIA request to the Nebraska Racing Commission, I have confirmed the following kills at Fonner Park last year.

Baseline Drive, Jan 27, Fonner T
“[multiple] fractures, euthanized”

Classical Ace, Mar 3, Fonner T
“compound fracture, euthanized”

Kulthum, Mar 10, Fonner R
“pulled up and collapsed near outside rail; all membranes very pale and horse not breathing – bled out”

Fifty Two Pickup, Mar 31, Fonner R
“crashed into rail, bled-out both nostrils, died”

Karalinka, Apr 2, Fonner T
“slab fracture, tried to stabilize and make broodmare, unsuccessful, euthanized”

Taste of Texas (sic), Apr 6, Fonner T
“fell, shoulder fracture, euthanized”

Falcon Heavy, Apr 22, Fonner R
“fell, compound fracture, euthanized”

In addition, the Commission forwarded other “incidents.” While it appears these horses survived their initial diagnoses/injuries, this only further underscores that the evil of horseracing involves much more than just death.

  1. Trying to stabilize a fracture in order to squeeze further money out of a horse as a broodmare is abhorrent. There was a Thoroughbred farm down the road from me that had retired mares for breeding, and I remember seeing their grossly swollen knees and fetlocks during the short times they were out in the pasture. It was sickening watching them hobble around carrying foals on joints double and sometimes triple the normal size.

  2. The suffering inflicted on the horses is sickening and soul crushing! These people should be arrested for Animal Cruelty.
