Yes, One in Vermillion Is an Industry Casualty

In Arizona yesterday, One in Vermillion was euthanized for laminitis – laminitis that came as a direct result of a training injury suffered at Zia Park in November. This one is being widely covered in the racing press because, and only because, One was a “star.” In fact, his last race was a “win” in the $500K “Jerkens Memorial” at Saratoga Aug 26. If that race sounds familiar, it should, for that’s the one in which New York Thunder horrifically broke down in the stretch. On another note, with oodles of cash to be had on the back end (the breeding shed, that is), One likely suffered longer than he should have. Disgusting.

  1. I am horrified the cruelty these horses have to suffer. Something needs to be done to stop it. It’s animal abuse and that is a crime and should be treated as any other crime. My heart breaks my heart

Multiple horses were manhandled, mistreated and killed at the lower levels, as well as the upper levels, of horse racing and yet the racing industry publications only bring attention to the death of an upper level horse. This disregard for the horse as a horse, a sentient being, is so typical of this industry.
    This is Animal Cruelty in your face. What are you gonna do about it????
    Educating the public is key and I applaud everyone who is making the effort to get the word out of the reality that horse racing is vile and wearing hats, whether fancy, goofy or just plain tacky while drinking mint juleps is so not cool.

Most folks do not know about the horrors inherent in this industry, and I, for one wagered heavily on the horses for many years without so much as a clue about the daily deaths and severe maltreatment of the animals. The industry always did its level best to create an false environment that the deaths were rare, and almost always, a sad and unforeseen accident. Maltreatment was greatly hidden, but in today’s information age, the true facts are getting harder and harder to hide.

    Many years ago someone said “a lie never lives to grow old”. Don’t know who said it, but it sure applies here in horse racing,

    I do believe, however it has gotten much worse for several reasons that have been discussed here many times, foremost among them is that racing is in a deep decline and cannot sustain itself anymore as a profit-making enterprises without external subsidies..

    As the truth about the state of the industry becomes more wide-spread, more people will abandon this ‘sport’ in search of other gaming pastimes that do not involve unwilling sentient beings.

    I do know that the insiders will do what they can to protect their interests. But at some point they will no longer be able to.

  6. This is one of the many things that is so hypocritical

    about racing. When a “star” dies, so called mourners

    come out with tears flowing. However, not a lot of casual

    racing fans know that this is business as usual. My 2 goals

    of 2024 are to educate as many people as possible as to what

    horseracing is all about and to hold prosecutors responsible

    for not prosecuting animal cruelty laws. We cannot call ourselves

    a civilized society if we continue to allow horseracing.
