“Euthanized on Track” at Charles Town; Another Death at Santa Anita

Flava’s Dream in the 5th at Charles Town last night, in the pithy wording of the chartwriter: “Flava’s Dream suffered a fatal injury into the first turn and had to be euthanized on the track.” Flava’s was five, and this was her 45th time under the whip. Her final exploiter, Joseph Woodit, also had her “For Sale” (cheap: $5,000) the day she died.

Also, word comes that Nickel Nickel Nine perished at Santa Anita Thursday, no details (of course) from the CHRB. He was also five. He becomes the 21st kill at SA this year, and the 70th at all Cal tracks. Yes, definitely safer.

  1. It seems that Charles Town didn’t get the memo about hiding the kills of racehorses on the racetrack.
Regardless of how many kills go unreported, the fact remains that horseracing is horse-killing and eventually the racetracks won’t have enough young, underdeveloped colts or fillies to fill the race cards due to declining numbers of new Thoroughbred foals produced each year.

      • FLAVA’S DREAM was born March 18, 2018 and was started racing on 0ctober 18, 2020. She was run a second time in 2020. She was raced 16 times in 2021. She was raced 17 times in 2022. She was raced 10 times in 2023. That’s a total of 45 times starting when she was 2 years and 7 months old. Now she’s dead, because she was killed by being raced to death on October 27, 2023.
Horseracing is definitely horse-killing. It needs to be recognized as the heinous act of Animal Cruelty that horseracing is!

        • She was also in a 2 year old under tack show. I found pictures of her- she was absolutely beautiful.

          • I saw that she was consigned to sell but didn’t sell. Her price was $4,000 but RNA, Reserve Not Attained. I can only wonder what damage they did to her at that young age.

  2. I cringe to think what is going to happen at the Breeders Cup races at Santa Anita next week! It is a certainty there will be casualties.

      • Why is Geaux Rocket Ride no surprise? Says they are going to “give him a chance” but I wonder. Only more pain and sadness to come.

        • I am very concerned about White Abarrio also for his connections planning a run in the Breeder Cup Classic. He has foot issues like GRR. Also,he was recently moved from Saffie Joseph to the Dutrow barn.
