Weekend Ugliness

From the weekend:

In a $4,500 claiming race Saturday at Laurel, 6-year-old Valley Stream finished last of 11, some 40 lengths back. Equibase said he “was under the whip nearing the turn and faltered.” This, by the way, was his 38th time under the whip.

In the 3rd Sunday at Golden Gate, 4-year-old Tiz a Chick “got outsprinted to the turn, stopped mid turn then was eased in the stretch, pulled up lame following the finish and was vanned off” (Equibase). In her only other two races, one in September and one three weeks ago, she finished 9th of 11 and dead-last (“had no speed”).

One race later, 3-year-old Princesse “went wrong after three sixteenths, was pulled up on the turn then eased through the stretch and vanned off following the finish.” In her most recent race, Princesse finished second-to-last – just ahead of the “no speed” Tiz a Chick. Both horses, by the way, still earned money for their connections Sunday – simply by virtue of finishing.

This is horseracing.
