Killed, 2020

The following racehorses were killed at American tracks in 2020. Please note, however, that these are on-site deaths only – the “catastrophically injured” who were euthanized back at the farm or after being acquired by a rescue are not reflected here. Neither, the horses who perished at the over 200 private training facilities strewn across the land. In addition, some states withheld, or claimed they had no records of, training and/or stall deaths. So, this list – 1,000 strong – could easily and reasonably be doubled, leaving us well in excess of 2,000 dead horses last year.

Furthermore, this list says nothing of the multiple thousands of 2020’s “retired” who were shackled, hung, slashed, bled-out, and butchered in foreign abattoirs. In short, what follows is far from a complete reckoning of horseracing’s carnage.

Finally, while reading, please be mindful that the killing is but a part of the story. There is, also: the pounding of unformed bodies; the cruel, unremitting, solitary confinement; the whipping; the drugging and doping; and, of course, the commodification – collectively, the Horseracing Wrongs. – Patrick Battuello

Every effort has been made to ensure the accuracy of this list. That said, my information is only as good as the information I receive. If it can be proved that a horse appears in error, I will dutifully remove.

  1. Hi there. I’m entering a pumpkin carving contest and I want to raise awareness to the hideous number of horses that are dying each year due to the racing business. I was looking at your information, specifically with respect to Los Alamitos vs Santa Anita. Santa Anita seems to be getting all of the press over the number of horses and the rate that horses are dying. How come we aren’t hearing about Los Alamitos race track if 39 horses have died just in 2020? Just curious. This is just awful. I had a horse when I was a kid… They are so special. Thanks for keeping track of this information.

    • The killing at Los Alamitos has garnered media attention, Tricia, albeit not at a Santa Anita level. This can be wholly explained by the fact that SA is one of the top two or three tracks in the entire country; Los Al isn’t.

      • Thank you for your response. I learned a lot from your site and will continue to check back. I’ll post a picture of my carved pumpkin on your facebook link once I get back onto FB (after election). It will be called: “the Angry Ghost of Strictly Biz”, the last horse that died racing at Santa Anita.

    • I started a small movement for horses, which is I plant red poppies in my small horse gaming map to represent racehorses that’s been killed and make virtual graves for famous racehorses who died. I try to find the total number of horses died each year so I can plant each flower to represent one horse.

  2. Scrolling through this long list of carnage is troubling, to say the least.
Several of the deaths are very disturbing – found dead in stall – collapsed and died – ruptured gut…
I looked at several of the racing histories of these horses which raised even more questions for me.
This industry is a hotbed of nefarious activity. It is a national disgrace.

  3. Does anyone know how you can check on a horse to be sure he’s ok? I saw a race on tv 2 weeks ago and have been trying to see if the horse is ok 🙏🏻 I know he was vanned off

  4. Too many horses suffer horrible deaths after “outliving their usefulness” on the racectrack instead of being released to reputable sanctuaries. This is outrageous, mercenary and cruel.

  5. I know the owners of Fight Night who fell after winning in July 2019. I can tell you they are very protective of their horses and do everything right. Can’t say that about all owners. We were devastated to lose her! Sometimes accidents just happen. If you own horses like I do, even as pleasure horses if they can manage to get in trouble they do. I’ve lost horses due to accidents here at home and I do EVERYTHING to make them safe. Doesn’t always help. Not all race horse owners should be in the business for sure but lots of owners are highly responsible. As for the horses they are bred to run and alot of them love it and some just don’t. Like everything in life, it not black or white but many shades of grey. Keep that in mind.
