While not all the “vanned” end up dead, most do, as borne out by our year-end FOIA reports. But even if death is not the ultimate result, the above are victims nonetheless, suffering painful injuries – in the case of the bleeders, pulmonary hemorrhage – so that some men may gamble, others chase pots of gold. (For any new confirmed deaths during the week, please see our running annual list.)

  1. Kentucky Ghost was forced to go the entire distance of the race. He was struggling from the onset but the rider refused to pull him up. Not a word about him online. Bad publicity Churchill doesn’t want after last year when poor Medina Spirit dropped dead following the drug controversy. I doubt Kentucky Ghost survived. No doubt the jockey probably killed him by not pulling him up after he was obviously injured. He’s considered a top rider but he should be barred from racing. How sad.

    • Thank you for sharing this, Karen. Considered a top rider in this egregiously CRUEL industry of exploiting horses in the most cruel, sadistic, brutal ways is not a good recommendation for anyone who truly appreciates the horses as what they are — sentient beings. Horses are sentient beings forced to endure confinement, whipping, shocking and other cruelties in this industry. The racing industry regards the horses as slaves to be treated as a product, a commodity; gambling chips and meat.
It’s ironic to expect people in this industry to treat horses kindly, because it is a cruel industry.

  2. its heart rending. what steps can we take concretely to stop this assault on horse lives

  3. When are we going to get the news agencies to show what really happens to the horses? Not one source announces the truth behind any race and its consequences. It’s disgusting and so manipulated by the people with the money. Where are the groups like PETA and others for treating animals humanely? Where are they??

    • One of the things that PETA is doing is bringing attention to Rodolfo Sanchez, the so-called trainer, who was beating on a Quarter Horse filly tied to a tree in Texas. They have a petition to get him banned for life from horse racing.
