Why Subsidies to NY Horseracing Are Immoral

Last week, legislators in New York announced a bill that would redirect nearly a quarter-billion dollars in annual subsidies from the racing industry to public-good things like education and human services. Horseracing Wrongs, I write proudly, is part of the coalition that has made this happen. While the subsidies are wrong for other reasons – cheating schoolchildren, undermining the free market – they are mostly wrong, indeed immoral, because they have made the following possible. (While reading, please bear in mind that these are only the deaths confirmed by the Gaming Commission; i.e., this is surely not a complete reckoning.)

    • Alan, thanks for sharing this link to the Times-Union article. The author states that it will take a lot of education to get this bill passed.

  1. I am glad to see on this list of the sacrificed that the barbaric STEEPLECHASE casualties have been included. This is a big attraction at Saratoga. As I have mentioned before, my relative long time California resident had no clue their taxes go to subsidies. If we can get other states to jump on the bandwagon how rewardingly great that would be for the good of the horses and good of communities.

    ..

    • I think California is one of the only states that doesn’t subsidize racing. Maybe Patrick has some facts.

      • Alan, that would be great if we could verify the Cali subsidies. I did tell my cousin about subsidies going to tracks rather than improvements that are so desperately needed all over. She has a massive friend network so she can spread the word also because most have no idea.

      • As a former Associate Steward of the CHRB I was privy to some documents regarding the deals cut between politicians and horse racing.
Much of this information should be available via public documents and some even on pro-horse racing sites.
Nevertheless, I will sum up these backroom ole boys club deals, with little to no input from California residents or constituents, herein: 1) when Frank Stronach was at the helm and owner of now defunct companies such as Magna International (bankrupt), Magna Entertainment (bankrupt), The Stronach Group transformed into something now called 1st he ordered around politicians like puppets. 2) it’s no coincidence that former Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger is Austrian-born and so is Frank Stronach 3) Arnold played a huge hand in defending and meeting demands by Frank Stronach like a father to son more or less 4) if there was anybody on the CHRB that didn’t acquiescence his demands then he would get them fired 5) Frank Stronach was a bully and plowed over anybody who got in the way of him acquiring tracks 6) there was MASSIVE tax breaks, property tax deferrals and plenty of others that all of the politicians put through with little transparency to the public 7) on June 19, 2007 he attended a CHRB meeting to solidify his commitment of 24 million in stable area improvements to keep the tax breaks going.
8 years later, when little to nothing was done and with nothing to show for these tax breaks they were finally being questioned as to what was going on?
Magna CEO Michael Neuman, at the time, responded to requests for proof (such as receipts or appearance) by telling the CHRB that Frank Stronach had no intentions of improving anything or very little plans were on the table to meet his commitments that were promised to get these deals in place.
He was fired by Frank Stronach 2 weeks later and very little follow-up was done while these massive tax breaks continued.
Of course the “jobs, jobs, jobs” mantra was utilized on a frequent basis and this was coming from a dude who claimed bankruptcy under 2 former companies which resulted in HUNDREDS if not THOUSANDS of contractors/workers, small business not getting paid for their work – so much for jobs right?
        Sounds familiar?
How about all of those stable workers bent over million dollar racehorses in Chad Brown’s barn not getting paid for either their work or massive overtime.
Think about that – can you imagine working and not getting paid so you are unable to pay rent, buy food, feed your family while watching owners spend millions buying a racehorse?
This has been going on in horse racing FOR YEARS and so have the massive tax breaks to Frank Stronach and whatever company name he operated under including ADENA SPRINGS his horse racing operations.
I know a Trainer that had 10 of his racehorses in active training and it was taking 90 days to get paid for his training fees which covers the costs of stable help, grain and hay for the racehorses.
Essentially, he was funding his 10 racehorses while sleeping in his car – no exaggeration.
The farrier and vets stopped coming to the barn because they hadn’t been paid in 90 days and what did Stronach do when anybody complained about this?
Well, he just fired them and moved on to his next victims like a true parasite does.
These massive tax breaks freely given to his track operations didn’t only happen in California as this was a blueprint for all the other tracks he bought in Maryland, Oklahoma, Texas and Florida.
To this day, little to nothing had been done in Maryland and it’s a massive chaotic situation there with politicians still willing to freely handout millions to a company that has proven to do nothing of which was originally promised.
The tracks in Oklahoma and Texas were sold and to this day are nothing but a money pit.
In fact, all tracks are nothing but a financial burden on taxpayers because it’s us little people that pay for these massive tax breaks because this is money that should be going to the public good.
Above all else it’s the poor racehorses that pay the price, every step of the way, as Kill Lists after kills prove and all of us are forced to pay for these utterly disgusting parasitic scum bags who contribute little to our communities or much of anything else as we pick up the broken bodies of their disposable gambling chips.

  2. One can only estimate the number of the thousands of horses that were exploited by this industry and suffered from the abuse INHERENT to horseracing and Pari-mutuel wagering in the same time period in the State of New York or any other state that exploits horses.
Horses are trafficked or hauled from one state to another and sometimes from one country to another. A horse born in New York could be killed in Kentucky or anywhere. A horse born in any other state could be killed in the State of New York so it all needs to go.
CONGRATULATIONS to the legislators of New York and to the coalition to end the subsidies to horseracing!!!!!!!🎉🙏 (Praying the bill passes!)

  3. GREAT NEWS — THANK YOU — Reading this, I could not believe my eyes — excellent job by relentlessly informing Legislators — excellent job by HORSERACING WRONGS — “Last week, legislators in New York announced a bill that would redirect nearly a quarter-billion dollars in annual subsidies from the racing industry to public-good things like education and human services. Horseracing Wrongs, I write proudly, is part of the coalition that has made this happen.” — KEEP AT IT.

  4. Allegedly, the subsidies to horseracing in the State of New York are “not subsidies” but rather Video Lottery Terminal payments. Supposedly, the State of New York owes these “VLT payments” to the horseracing industry in New York because there was an alleged transfer of ownership of land and intellectual property in 2008 and (lucky you, lucky us, lucky somebody…) the NYRA remains active stewards of said transferred lands and intellectual properties. The subsidies, therefore, are not subsidies, but rather Video Lottery Terminal payments. How special! This industry is so special that it deserves to be self-supporting or die. If horseracing is creating so much revenue and so many jobs, why can’t this horse-abusing, horse-killing industry support itself???
The fact is that anyone working on the backside (grooms, pooper-scoopers) are most likely existing in squalid conditions and could be eligible to apply for and receive public assistance — welfare but not CORPORATE WELFARE. It’s high time that the white-collar horse-killers be terminated from the CORPORATE WELFARE whether it’s called subsidies or VIDEO LOTTERY TERMINAL PAYMENTS.

  5. Thank you, Gina, for elaborating on more of the details on how the “tax breaks” (or whatever other terminology is used to describe this fraudulent activity) to horseracing in California, to Frank Stronach and to the propping up of his wagering accounts (his current wagering account name being 1/ST (Bet?) were acquired. What a scam!!! What a con artist!!!!! What a __________________!!!!!!
