Six Kills at Del Mar – But They’re So Much Better Than Other Tracks!

Two more kills in California yesterday: Storm Spun, three, training at San Luis Rey. Set the Tone, two, training at Del Mar. On the latter, the ethically-challenged John Cherwa wrote this for The Union-Tribune: “It was the fifth racing or training fatality at the track this year, which is well below most major tracks. According to the [fraudulent] Equine Injury Database, Del Mar has the lowest percentage of racing fatalities at a major track.” As if only five dead horses is somehow a cause for celebration. Sick. (Note: Del Mar has six kills total, with one coming in the barn.)

  1. What a selling point to imply “our racing and wagering business is safer/better than yours or anyone else’s” when it is a given that horses will die while being forced to endure the abuse of racing. They might as well say, “Our poisoned food will kill fewer than your poisoned food” as if we’re supposed to be impressed. How utterly stupid!!!! Yeah, that’s the ticket. Just keep reminding everyone that horses are killed by the racing and wagering business, then quibble over the numbers.

  2. Hey, john ….you dumber than dirt ….. Now , HEAR me on THIS …ONE death, is one too many!!!!!!!!!!! No trying to “rationalize” this bullshit. Would ANYONE accept a stupid human losing their life for a game? NO. And YOU know it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  3. I DON’T WATCH RACING ANY MORE. TO ME IT IS ONE BRUTAL
DEATH SENTENCE FOR ANY HORSE ON A RACE TRACK;THE
DAYS OF HORSE RACING MUST END, GONE ON WAY TOO LONG,
THE LIVES OF THESE WONDERFUL HORSE GIVE THEIR ALL AND
WHEN USEFUL NO. MORE THEY ARE KILLED.STUPID PEOPLE
FIND SOME OTHER OUTLET. BAN RACING.

  4. Whoa there ‘Cherwy’ – you’re an ass, a selfish uncaring ass who lives off the lives of animals who are clearly more intelligent as you. A horse slavery death is still a death you POS.

  5. I wonder if Mr. Cherwa has figured out yet that Del Mar has fewer kills only because they host live racing less than three months out of the year. The other California death tracks run — and kill horses — pretty close to year-round. Somebody really should point this out to him.
    On second thought…
Nah. Let’s just let him keep pretending that they’re the Safest Death Track in the Nation. He seems to get a lot of joy out of throwing around the fake-safety accolades:)

  6. Isn’t it ironic that the CEO of Del Mar opened up the Safety Protocol Meeting for the Breeders Cup with – what else? – a kill?
Her name is SET THE TONE and they downplayed the kill because it happened during training hours.
A kill is a kill no matter when and where you racehorse killers.
I sincerely hope that the demise of horse racing in California is coming soon and everywhere else for that matter.
By the way, huge water shortages predicted in California with rations frequently to California residents, but NOT to horse racing – no way.
Yet, this unnecessary gambling venue requires hundreds of thousands of gallons of water PER DAY to wet down the dirt track and to bathe the racehorses.
Of course a mention should be made for Barbara Banke of Stonestreet Farm who is part owner of Gamine who tested positive for dope, but got herself elected onto the Breeders Cup Board just in time to waive any punishment on Bob Baffert so that he could run who?
    Well Gamine of course.
There’s just no bottom to this deeply corrupt killing business and it’s time to put it to rest.

    • Great, and I’d love to join you there. I think I remember you stating you’ve staged several other protests at Del Mar, so if you’re the same Melanie and you’d welcome another anti-racing horsewoman to your ranks for a couple hours, let me know. I give Patrick permission to share my email address with you:)

      • Sure. That would be great. I’m not the organizer but we definitely could use more people.

  7. One dead horse is too many. There will be other kills in the next four weeks here @ Del Mar. Please join me to protest this Saturday for the Breeders Cup. Protest starts @ 8:30 AM – 11:00 AM.

    • You got that right Ellen! It’s Russian Roulette for these innocent dear souls. Two yr old Jack Christopher, the heavy favorite for the juvenile, has been injured and scratched out of race. TWO yrs old!!!!! And already well on the road of breaking down/or life of constant pain. This is not funny you horse racing apologists. It’s murder and maiming of innocent lives, who are slaves. Poor horses have absolutely no voice.

      • He’s not the only one scratched because of issues. United and Domestic spending are also out, so far, because of leg issues. The wear and tear on these poor horses is adding up.

        • There have been quite a few scratched. It is a blessing as they live another day and they weren’t raced “anyway” even though injured somehow. Good luck to all the protesters. It would be great if there was TV coverage and maybe invite this Cherwa guy to get a story. Haha

          • I look forward to the day when the people of California will be able to vote this organized abuse and killing of Thoroughbreds and Quarter Horses out of existence as we know it. Laws against (the so-called “Sport of Kings”) the “organized” torture and subsequent killing of racehorses needs to be a new reality for all. That would include every level in existence now and prevent new tracks from being developed at any level. Pass legislation to stop horse racing, wagering and horse-killing; and punish the people who commit these evil deeds!!!!

  8. It’s like a murderer telling the judge “well sure I killed those five people, but Your Honor, THAT guy over there killed seven people, so clearly I’m innocent.”

  9. Protesting at the Breeders Cup this morning we were THRILLED to see TWO panel trucks going around with anti-racing messages with your website info. Thank you!!!!
