Del Mar Closes Meet With a Kill (2-Year-Old Honor Award)

Not quite the coda that Joe Harper and the Del Mar suits had in mind. Honor Award broke down in the 2nd today, closing day, and, the track has just announced (“with heavy hearts”), is dead. (The track also passed along its “deepest sympathies to the Wygods, trainer John Shirreffs and his team”; i.e., to the killers.) Honor Award was just two – a baby – and was under the whip for the very first time.

This is horseracing.

  1. So tragic, unnecessary and sad! God bless all of these horses that are unfortunately involved in this Blood Sport. I pray that this will end.

  2. Well, at least they didn’t pretend to try to save him, like all the blood sport marketing geniuses want. I’m truly thankful that they didn’t subject poor Honor Award to “treatment,” thus likely inflicting on him a lifetime of pain and suffering — before he’s ultimately dumped, that is — just to avoid having to report his Death by Racing.

  3. Everyone who participates in the Sport of Kings are killers, whether they are willing to admit it or not. Two-year-olds are not able to perform as adult horses without breaking down in some way. It would be obvious to the veterinarians and to everyone else involved in this business of extreme brutalization of horses for gambling bets and financial gain for years and years that a two-year-old horse is going to have pain and inflammation necessitating the use of pain-killing drugs. Ask Baffert.
How did the lawsuit turn out? It was not about how much CRUELTY he inflicted on a horse, especially regarding the horse named MEDINA SPIRIT in the Racketeering Influenced and Corrupt Organizations Act. It was about cheating other people out of their “winnings” of money… 💰! Who in HORSERACING and Pari-Mutuel WAGERING care about how much pain a horse is in???

  4. Oh sure ‘heavy hearts’ it upset them because they won’t be able to make any money off of Honor Award!

  5. Does anyone offer “deepest sympathies” with “heavy hearts” to a murderer when he finally kills his victim?

  6. Of course, these ‘horse loving’ people have heavy hearts and sympathy for the owners, trainer and team….heavy because they’ve ALL lost the chance of money-grabbing profits and their five minutes of glory and fame. But never mind, I’m sure they’ll be able to collect the insurance money and the slaughterhouse fee, wouldn’t want them to be out of pocket would we????
