For Your Consciences, Horseracing Apologists…

As with real sports, the racing people are fond of year-end reviews, including notable figures lost. In Horse Racing Nation’s version (“In Memoriam”), among the 18 “equine stars” remembered exactly two were active at the time of their deaths (Taraz, X Y Jet). Nary a word on any of the other 457 horses killed at U.S. tracks last year. (Note: I’ve yet to file my FOIA requests, so that number will grow, dramatically.) But why would they? To acknowledge a significant number of the dead, let alone all of them, would force the apologists to confront their own complicity to carnage.

  1. Patrick & HORSERACINGWRONGS,
Without your diligence of gathering all of the information and the names of all of the horses exploited, injured and killed in the racing industry (in the USA) and by the racing participants, all of the horses listed above would be swept under the rug, except for those most high profile horses. Even then, the racing people would act like it was okay for them to have died, for whatever reason. A horse in racing is reduced to a slave for greedy people to make money off of and that fact cannot be denied. It isn’t rocket science.
X Y JET was doped to death, but what person addicted to betting on horses cares about that…?
Horseracing is EXTREMELY CRUEL TO HORSES and must be ended.
To gambling addicts: Stop gambling on horses. Let the wagering handle dry up. Let the horses have a life of being turned out to a paddock or pasture, at least occasionally. Let the horses have a chance to enjoy life.

  2. Yes, thank you. All of their lives mattered. ALL. We here on this site, see all of you majestic horses, who got a raw deal in life. Take note Apologists, how unbelievably LONG this list is. It’s not fair.

      • You and ME both Nancy!!! I saw so much of myself in him. He was a very sensitive horse, and other horses acting up would bother him to no end. He was a most beautiful boy and soul,he was like a highly tuned machine. I always knew #BeautifulSensitiveSoul. I cry just thinking about him.

  3. Patrick &Co.. THANK YOU! We remember them all and weep…the ultimate betrayal in full display. Innocent lives taken senselessly.
I met a Canadian couple a few days ago… we started talking about nothings until she mentioned Casinos and how they enjoyed going to the Woodbine race track and… BET…on horses… as a weekend pastime.. once in a while. I felt my blood boiling. But, decided to try and educate rather than crucify.. if the audience was open to that. Oh, and I told them everything they should know about horse racing. Everything I have learned from HW and the wonderful people here. The result… she started crying and said they NEVER would have imagined the atrocities…they thought the horses were treated “like royalty” I begged for them to STOP going to the races, to tell their friends and their families to do the same. I truly believe many bettors have no idea what they are contributing to and it is my hope and expectation there are now at least 2 educated humans who will make the right choice. All I can do is hope…

    • Thank you Andrea!! The education of the general public is so important. Most people don’t know the reality, and it is usually very eye opening when they find out. I know this was true with me when I became involved in racing.
I had a similar experience with some new coworkers recently. We were discussing racing and rescue, and when they heard the things I’ve seen, or even what’s been shared here, my one coworker said she will stick to blackjack. She even said she never realized it was this bad. The other coworker asked, “well why can’t they put them in a cast!”. I told her – nicely – that when a horse’s leg is laying on the track no longer attached to the horse, there’s no way to fix it. She was shocked. She had no idea horses are killed if they catastrophically injure themselves racing. She also said she will never go to a track again.
There is a lot of misconception In the public regarding racing. We need to educate as much as we can, and make folks realize in reality it’s not mint juleps, party day, and pretty hats at the track every day.

      • This has to be the means to the end NOT letters and calls to those who laugh and deep 6 concerns
People who are in the public who can hear from our advocates the nonglam side of casual trips to the track
(My punctuation key gave up sorry)

        • Nancy, that is a very fitting description to say “deep-six” when governors and other politicians reject the idea of termination of any type of government subsidy to the horse racing industry.
If everyone could see the necropsy photos, the gruesome injuries of shattered bones and torn ligaments, it would make people think twice about how race horses are treated!!! If people could see the degenerative joint disease and ulcers in racehorses that are unseen by just looking at the outside of a horse, that would be something!
I totally agree that educating the general public on the pain, suffering and injuries to horses exploited for racing is absolutely essential to getting people to understand that it is wrong to pour money into the bank accounts of racing participants through the Pari-Mutuel wagering handle with $2 bets or $1 bets.

  4. This reads like an injury list of horses involved in a high speed freeway accident or found during a literal war, not horses living in stalls and running on a soft, even dirt track. Nobody involved in the racing industry has ever been able to explain how their horses can suffer such atrocities – nor do they care. The only explanation ever offered is “that’s just horse racing”, as if that should be enough to wipe the blood from their hands and cover the agony and terror these horses died with.

  5. No doubt every single horse mentioned on this list has already been FORGOTTEN by their owners, trainers and jockeys…..you know….the ‘people’ that claim to love their horses like family and are absolutely ‘heart-broken’ when a horse gets killed or badly injured!!!! What utter BS these ‘people’ utter…..
