To You, the Bettor

A plea, on Preakess Day…

To those who wager on horseracing, we implore you to reconsider. And ultimately, you hold all the cards – no more bets, no more races; no more races, no more kills. And – no more abusing unformed bodies; no more extreme, relentless confinement; no more whipping; no more drugging and doping; no more buying and selling and trading and dumping. No more auctions, no more kill-buyers, no more transport trucks, no more abattoirs. No more maiming, destroying; pain, suffering. No more.

In a landscape that abounds with other gambling options – casinos, lotteries, real sports involving autonomous human beings – hasn’t the time at long last arrived to let the racing horse be? You, the bettor, have within the capacity for mercy. We ask only that you exercise it. Please. For the horses.

  1. I use to love and look forward to the races , then I found you and educated me and I stop watching on TV , one time I did a bet before the educating , that was 7 years ago and I never watched another race on TV . I never new of the corruption in the gaming game .

  2. There is a “bait and switch” type of website on the internet. I discovered it last night while on Facebook. I was reading a post by The Livestock Conservancy about Florida Cracker Cattle and Florida Cracker Horses. They are two breeds of endangered livestock that might go extinct if there is a lack of interest and education about these breeds. I clicked on the link to the Florida Cracker Horse (Association?) and it is NOT about the almost extinct breed of Florida Cracker Horses at all. It is a type of “bait and switch” because it is about horseracing and betting/wagering. There are different articles or posts evidently designed to educate and “lure” people into the world of horse racing and wagering on Thoroughbreds and other racing breeds. Nasir Huang has several articles posted there. It is annoying to say the least! I think it is illegal but what can anyone do to stop this blatant deception to lure people into the world of gambling on race horses? There is a disclaimer about using the information on the site as well. Bait and switch is NOT legal.

  3. Thank you, Darlene! Only when the public is aware of the cruel realities of horseracing will the horses have a chance of being no longer exploited, crippled and killed by it!

  4. And people need to understand the ugliness of the breeding business, the less overt side of racing. They need to know about the broodmares standing at auction and being loaded on to the slaughter-bound trucks because they are not producing “winners” or the breeder is downsizing, or many different “reasons”! And then there are the “successful” mares, the “producers”, bred when they 20 yrs.old and more…

On Friday, 2/10/ 2020, after the weaning of her 9th foal, and being “pensioned”, the broodmare, Please Sign In, was euthanized because of a “deteriorating neurological condition”. She was 24 yrs. old and had produced a colt in 2018 and her 9th, and final foal, is an unnamed weanling colt (foals at 22 and 24 yrs. of age!)

    • Excellent point, Rose! Overbreeding is a HUGE issue.
Unfathomable yet real the abuse of Please Sign In!!! I am sure there are thousands like her out there. The depravity of this industry and “humans” within it know/s no bounds or limits. This is not a civilized society we are living in.

    • Soring is a term for “a procedure” used in the world of Tennessee Walking Horses for the horse show event known as “the Big Lick” that is brutally barbaric. I agree it needs to be banned completely. The Big Lick must be banned, because that is why they do the “soring” to the Tennessee Walkers. I signed a petition against soring in 2016 or early 2017 but as soon as “you-know-who” was inaugurated into office on January 20, 2017 all issues such as anything horrendously cruel to animals as well as climate change and anything relevant to such issues, including petitions, were deleted or scrubbed from the government records or computers. Therefore, the United States Department of Agriculture would no longer be required to do anything to recognize the soring (abuse) of Tennessee Walking Horses or to do anything to stop it. So the petition was basically thrown into FILE #13. To say that I was disappointed is a gross understatement!!!!!!!!!!!!

      • Soaring, is totally unacceptable, yet it has been going on for decades, as have other cruel practices. I don’t know of any administration that has done much to alleviate animal suffering. The few concessions achieved have been hard won.
Anti-horse-slaughter bills have been introduced in each congress for over a decade. Despite wide bipartisan support, not one bill has been passed into law…politicians!!

    • FYI, when Mitch McConnell (head of the GOP) first entered politics he was financially supported by the horse soring abusers in TN and KY.
In fact, he received a $600,000 donation in total to block any legislation making it illegal.
The battle went on for years, but the Bill to BAN horse soring was on Obama’s desk to be signed when he was voted out.
The first thing Mitch McConnell did was rip up the legislation to remain loyal to the horse racing abusers.
He also protects the horse racing business in KY, which is the main reason why he keeps getting voted back in again.
They infuse tons of money into his political coffers and he in turns protects the abuse.
The Trump administation has been deliberately, systematically, and efficiently wiping out protections for American wildlife, endangered species all in favor of trophy hunters and corporations.
Trump cleared the way for the BLM to wipe out wild horses.
The list goes on and on so remember that when you vote in 1 month.

      • Plenty of blame to go around over many, many years. Politicians!!!
Personally, I don’t believe we should digress into politics on this site. Just my opinion.
However, there has been bipartisan support for ending horse slaughter for over a decade and it has gone nowhere for over a decade…

      • And, as I said, there is blame to go around. I remember how I felt re the “disappearance”of hundreds of wild horses and how Ken Salazar, the then Secretary of the Interior, lost his “cool” when a reporter asked what happened to the horses
And the BLM has sold at least 1,700 wild horses and burros since 2009 to Tom Davis, a little- known livestock hauler from Colorado. Davis is a longtime advocate of horse slaughter. This is from an article in the LAS VEGAS SUN:
“All the Missing Horses: What happened to all the wild horses Tom Davis bought from the government?”
        Politicians are just politicians…
I apologize if I have offended any of the good people here. It was not my intention.

      • No problem, Rose. I know that we should avoid talking about “the elephant in the room” while so many people are and have been pleading with that “same elephant” to stop government subsidies to the horseracing industry as well as other issues regarding animal abuse and abuses against other breeds and types of horses.

  5. I NO LONGER SUPPORT THIS SO CALLED SPORT OF DECEPTION AND CRUELTY !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  6. What you do NOT see is the horror behind the scenes — if you KNEW, dear Spectator, you would STOP dead in your tracks to NEVER return to the Racetrack — RESCUE our HORSES — STOP frequenting the Racetrack PERMANENTLY — let’s SHUT DOWN this depravedly cruel industry FOREVER.

  7. This is a question re Ramzan Altooa who had a court date on 21 Sept. regarding the filly, Pasta, he allegedly let out of her stall deliberately. She was badly injured on a nearby street and was euthanized.

“LUCY” posted on this site on Aug. 2 re the incident. She opened her comment by saying: “You stupid fools, the racing community is outraged by this and will make sure that guy is put in jail for a long time”. It sounds like “Lucy” is a racing insider so I hope she will provide an update. It would be appreciated.

Also, “FLATBUSH #4” commented re the incident on this site, 2 Aug. The comment maintained Ramzan was the “victim” in this case because there is no avenue for the workers to have their grievances heard. I would like to know if she has any update on the case, including what Ramzan’s grievance was and why it led him to such a cruel deed.

Further, I wonder if Flatbush #4 is familiar with Oscar De La Torre, activist, who says racism within PETA needs to be investigated because of comments made by “members” protesting racing. He came out strongly in support of racing at a rally of backstretch workers at Santa Anita. He did not address the exploitation of the workers at all…
