Two More Kills at Belmont; Governor Cuomo, End This Carnage

As NYRA celebrates the opening of Saratoga today, a bit farther south the killing continues, unabated, at Saratoga’s sister track. The Gaming Commission has disclosed two more deaths at Belmont Park, bringing that track’s 2020 toll to 29. That’s 29 fully sentient – intelligent, sensitive, feeling, aware – beings destroyed, for gambling.

In the 6th race Sunday, Crater Rim “was vanned off after the finish.” Turns out, the 6-year-old suffered a lacerated tendon. Dead. Tuesday, 5-year-old Bourbon High broke down during morning training. Dead.

  1. This is sickening! The killing never stops! The cruelty and torture of horseracing is an abomination! It needs to be stopped!!!

  2. Saratoga hosts the barbaric steeplechase. Maybe with the current pandemic situation they will postpone that part of their itinerary this year.

  3. Entertainment that kills=animal cruelty! Nothing ‘sporting’ about abuse!

  4. Glad you mentioned Saratoga and their triumphant return today, Patrick. Because while you’re naming two (more) Actual Kills at Belmont, There were two more Almost-Kills (or, more accurately, two more Soon-to-Be Kills) at Saratoga, on their big, first day of COVID Racing.
And, while you won’t post these unconfirmed injuries (because, unlike every single member of the racing press, you have actual integrity and credibility), I am under no such mandate not to note them. I’ll scream it from the rooftops that not one, but two horses on the Saratoga COVID-Card Did Not Finish(!) their respective races today because they were TOO INJURED/LAME/PRE-BROKEN to do so. Neither was vanned off, though, so we can all expect a similar (or worse) result in their next races — if either even has any, and doesn’t suddenly “retire” or mysteriously “disappear.”

I’ve come to learn that being “Vanned off” (or even “Euthanized on Track”) is not even the worst fate racehorses suffer while actively racing. In many ways, a “DNF” is a WORSE harbinger for the horse. It usually indicates they’ll continue to be raced (abused) right up until the moment they DO become that dreaded Van or Euth:(

  5. Two more very young horses, Crater Rim and Bourbon High, murdered by those who not only do not care but obviously harbor disdain for these animals. Please, let’s get racing banned forever. RIP to these victims.
