“Vanned Off”: exactly how it sounds – the horse was unable to walk off the track on his own and required the “equine ambulance.” While not all of these horses end up dead, most do, as borne out by my year-end FOIA reports.
“Bled/Returned Bleeding From Nostrils”: typically indicates pulmonary hemorrhage.

Racing or training any horse to the point of injury and death is wrong and must be punished. The people that do this to horses need to be punished by law!!! The racetrack owners should NOT be receiving government subsidies to facilitate the inhumane treatment and torturing of horses to death.
There has to be a law first. Remember last year when all the horses were beaking down at Santa Anita and the Attorney General reviewed the subject and ruled that it was not inhumane to race horses? And that working horses to the point of breakdown was not animal cruelty? Laws have to be changed. Then people can be sued for this. And the reason that injured horses are not saved by surgery is that people do not want to spend money on that. They would rather euthanize. Anybody that participates in racing should show financial responsibility. Having surgical insurance for your stable should be a law. How can we upgrade animal cruelty laws? It seems like this country is far behind in enacting animal cruelty laws. By law animals are just property like furniture. Here is another thing. If owners could sue trainers for crippling and killing their horses that would stop. But when owners don’t pay the bill half the time the trainers can get away with whatever they like.
Why is this horrible industry still getting money from the government?
