Santa Anita Begins the New Year With – What Else – a Kill

In an altogether fitting way to begin the new year, Santa Anita has killed again. In the final race of the afternoon yesterday, this for 3-year-old Golden Birthday, according to Equibase: “GOLDEN BIRTHDAY…took a bad step then drifted out while being pulled up into the stretch with an injury behind, then lost the rider and was vanned off.”

Ah yes, the proverbial “bad step.” In fact, it was a broken leg, and he is dead. Victim number 1 of 2020. Folks, this is quite simple: They can’t stop the killing so we must stop them. Voice your outrage:

  1. Thank you, Patrick! Thank you for giving the links to voice our outrage. I think once more and more people are aware of how cruel horseracing is to horses, they will not support horseracing.

  2. Thanks for the update.
Yet another victim of this vile business.
I wonder what the fate of CARNIVOUROUS is.
He broke down and was vanned-off in the high profile stakes race: Joe Hernandez.
You know what the pro-horse racing entities are doing now?”
    SILENCE.
I reviewed Tweets from 6 pro-horse racing wagering sites that were very active promoting Santa Anita all day long yesterday, promoting how beautiful it was for the racehorses, the natural surrounding, the flower pots for the selfies and, of course, went over every single horse “analysis” for placing bets to fill their wagering coffers.
Indeed, HOURS of promotions for every single race and then when GOLDEN BIRTHDAY broke down –
SILENCE – NOTHING – NO TWEETS AT ALL.
Then they went right back to their pro-horse racing analysis to bring in more money $$$ for their wagering coffers really playing up on the big stake race.
    Then CARNIVOROUS broke down.
SILENCE – NOTHING – NO TWEETS AT ALL and this was consistent throughout all pro-horse racing sites.
So it seems that their new strategy for 2020 is going to be to completely IGNORE the breakdowns, the deaths, the “vanned-off” racehorses while focusing on what they care about: $2 bets and money coming into their wagering coffers.
What a bunch of vile parasites.
    They all make me sick.

    • Hopefully, we the people who care about treating horses with respect and kindness will make enough noise about the wrongs of horseracing that the people we elected to make laws and enforce the laws against CRUELTY and TORTURE will do their job and PROTECT THE HORSES from these horseracing industry and gambling industry people who inflict so much pain and suffering on horses and the people that care about those horses from the heart!

    • Gina, I just got in from horsey chores:) and found that Golden Birthday’s death is the top story on CNN U.S. Edition. They note that they’ve “reached out” to SA officials. I’m guessing they’ve gotten no response yet, either. Anyway, maybe Carnivorous is alive and well, and his connections are just not eager to share with us their good fortune that he survived a trip (almost) around the Death Track. Or, he’s badly injured, but they’re forcing him to suffer for PR reasons. If that’s the case, let’s hope he’s heavily medicated.

  3. SA seemed to really want to keep this one under wraps. Everyone in the industry is touting transparency, and yet they are trying harder to cover things as much as possible. Just more usual lies and cover ups while they say they care about the health and wellness of horses and riders.

    • They might be trying to sweep it under the rug, but the media is jumping on every death now. I hope the pressure keeps on the racing industry – their days are numbered.

  4. Happy new year MAL, My baby brother graduated from Boston University. How lucky you are to live in such a Wonderful state. We had so much fun there, when we’d go to visit him.

    • Thanks. Plus they shuttered Suffolk Downs racetrack a year ago. Dog racing went first and then they got rid of thoroughbred racing. Happy New Year to you as well. Boston University an excellent school. My sister also went there. She lives in Santa Fe and has 5 rescue horses.

  5. This is so heartbreaking. Why can’t people understand that this is not acceptable and is cruel? Period.

  6. Just sent another email to Gov Newsome…he’s gonna be hearing from me daily!!
