40th Dead Horse at Santa Anita; It’s Time for One Courageous California Legislator to Call for an End

Yesterday, G Q Covergirl “broke down” – “both front legs,” says the LA Times – while training at Santa Anita. She was six years old and trained by Doug O’Neill, the very same Doug O’Neill cynically and despicably leading the “counter protesters” out in front of California tracks. Wondering how the “We Support Horseracing” crowd feels about fearless leader “Druggie” notching another dead horse.

G Q Covergirl is the 40th horse to die at Santa Anita this year. 40. At what point, America, do you stop believing their lies (“enhanced safety measures,” “welfare improvements”)? Horseracing kills – always has, always will. It must end. So today, I am calling on one morally courageous California legislator to start the process. History is watching; you will be rewarded accordingly.

The Santa Anita 40. (While reading and remembering, please note: At this point in last year’s Fall Meet, Santa Anita had the exact same number of dead horses – five. With the whole world watching, with more scratches and reduced fields – not because they care; rather, they can ill afford more negative press – the killing continues on schedule. Again, it is what it is.)

  1. Who do we all write to again in California to pressure action? Please post where to write and lets get a.big campaign going!

  2. Oh, yes, the same Mr. Drug O’Needle that struts his stuff in front of Santa Anita and hands out tacos as a band plays upbeat tunes. I am curious as to how the racing apologists will twist and spin this death. I would venture to guess that there is no way to blame it on the heavy rains this time!

  3. Utterly vile, unacceptable, and needs to be shut down now.
There are no reforms that can stop racehorses from being killed by these racehorse killers.
They are killers because they continue to subject their racehorses to the daily business practices that surely lead to their demise either maiming or killing them.
I don’t accept their excuse that they don’t deliberately kill them – you sure do.
You parasites watch the racehorses, whom you claim to treat “royally,” who are under your legal care, custody, and control ordering needles to be plunged into their jugular veins, joints, meds shoved into their mouths and whatever other orifice they can find.
This is mainly done in the corner cobwebs of their stalls, while the stall entry is blocked, when nobody can see just what the hell they are doing to these racehorses.
The owners are not innocent of these practices because they pay for them – end of story.
They are all racehorse abusers/killers or enablers.
We certainly can’t trust the CHRB of apologists, racehorse owners and/or investors.
Just like all other apologists their main focus is filling the races, wagering coffers, and wallets.
You all should know by now that they care nothing about the racehorses due to their inaction in implementing SB 469, which should have been enacted after the 1st racehorse dropped dead!
Now we have 40 – this is incredulous!!
    Investigations?
    What happened to those?
After 3 polite requests via their online forms to the D.A’s office I never got a response.
Not even an acknowledgment that they received my request.
We had alleged major fraud going on, more or less, and nothing has come out of it?
Is silence golden or are they just towing the line to get to the Breeders Cup which will net them billions in wagering profits?
FYI, the Breeders Cup controls its own drug testing process because they lease the track where the event takes place – the track, Santa Anita this year, merely facilitates the meet with business contracts in place.
The entire drug testing process for the Breeders Cup is flawed, in the least, but so is the entire drug testing process in California.
In one word – JUSTIFY and this has been probably going on for a long time.
I directly witnessed it, but horse racing doesn’t like people who exposes them for what they are: racehorse abusers, maimers, dopers, cheaters and killers.
It’s long overdue for California to shut this down and then the wave will begin.

  4. 40 dead horses, Satan is waiting for you who had a hand and didn’t say or help God’s creatures…
    Enjoy Hell..
Shame on people going to racetrack..

  5. from the $5000 claimers to the $1,000,000 winners, all tragic and unnecessary deaths. i pray that the killing of line of duty is the final straw that shuts down the killing fields,

  6. All horses die. But, this is ridiculous. Racing is simply too dangerous. And, there is no way to make it safe. SHUT IT DOWN!

  7. WHY do owners take their precious horses to this track its like a suicide track. Was there a bill signed this year to start WHEN? the CHRB should be intervening here,, Owners WHY are you taking your horses to this track?

    • Gayle, to answer your question – because their horses are NOT precious to them – they are mere tools of the trade. There is always another horse to fill the dead horse’s stall.

  8. They’re desperately trying to make it to the Breeders Cup and the big money so they’re doing everything they can to hide the numbers until then. Vanning horses off instead of euthanizing them where they fall, claiming “non-incidents” instead of the real and devastating injuries, and keeping the community party going with the help of the Paulick Report and their hordes of ignorant apologists. They’re proud of their relationships with their horses, and they should be: a discarded horse in a landfill, a certain gray Thoroughbred gelding starved to death, and now a horse in training with two snapped front legs. In what other equine venue can incidents like these occur and there is no (real) investigation, no public outcry, and NO animal welfare groups calling for an end to the senseless deaths? Racing has been untouchable for far too long, and the death toll is unconscionable. I don’t want to believe we are so far gone morally in our society that we will allow this legalized machine of cruelty, abuse, and death to continue to claim innocent lives.

  9. Yes, this absolutely disgusting and this must end. ALL living beings deserve to live their life as intended. That is one very good reason I am VEGAN.

  10. I’m wondering how much the insurance companies play in these deaths. Are the horses being euthanized because the owners can get more insurance money for a death than they can for an injured horse that would take time and money to rehabilitate? Maybe we should look at the track veterinarians who pronounce these poor horses useless and euthanize them. So sad for the horses who tried their best for the people who just threw them away. Follow the money.

  11. Horse racing should be banned. Basically, it has become a blood sport. Animals’ lives should take precedence over profit.

    • Not long ago steroids were legal and used by many “trainers”. Big Brown who won the Kentucky Derby was on steroids.

  12. Horrible, cruel, criminal!

Has anyone conducted a survey of Horseraising aficionados? If so, what is their psychological profile? It is hard to believe that there is so much insensitivity when using animals for for profit competition!! Many seem to forget that the same horses, dogs and other animals use for competition could be their family pets.

    Thank you!

    • Gloria, you hit the nail on the head, the insensitivity of these apologists has ALWAYS been the thing that makes me beyond consoling.Animals have meant the world to me my whole life, and all they are is Innocent ANGELS,who bring nothing but happiness. I worry like USA mass shootings, if people are becoming numb to all the BREAKDOWNS

  13. This is just awful!!! Horses were sent here from God as a blessing not to run them to death. This has to stop. We stopped dog racing because they said it was cruel, well these beautiful horses are being treated with cruelty!!!!

  14. β€œ SICKENING CRUELTY 😒, TO INNOCENT πŸ˜‡ BEINGS … ANIMALS ❀️ ARE INNOCENT πŸ˜‡, JUST LIKE YOUNG YOUNG CHILDREN ❀️, & NEED THE SAME LAWS PROTECTING THEM …

  15. This is beyond horrific. Sharing this horrible abuse once again. I am speechless right now but will come back later to reply.😒😒😒😒😒🐴🐴🐴🐴🐴

  16. How many more horses have to die before they shut them down and make them live liable for what they’ve already done in the last year 40 horse is a little much don’t you think are you people blind or just stupid maybe both but somebody needs to put a stop to it whether it’s a vet or somebody else somebody needs to put a stop to it

  17. They must stop running iffy horses.
They must see why this track is having so many horse fatalities. Could it be the track?
Last but important..are they being shoed the right way..just my thoughts and is not intended to hurt anybody’s feelings or lively hood.

  18. Horse racing laws need to change so that horses racing careers and heavy training do not begin until they are old enough their bones have finished growing.

  19. How many had to be euthanized for fractured legs?
Is there a record of horses treated with Tildren and or Osphos?
These horses are TOO YOUNG …….. they are “BACKED”…RIDDEN as YEARLINGS, raced at TWO…their skeletal systems are not mature enough to support ANY weight and they are pushed to high speeds.
Thoroughbreds bodies are too big to be supported by the increasingly slim legs.
Start the babies later, allow them to mature before pushing them to their top speeds before their bodies are more mature.

Also…What are the statistics of break downs on the other tracks in America?

  20. When is someone finally going to stop allowing horses to die at Santa Anita Race track it’s a death sentence for young horses who haven’t lived their lives…

  21. Enough is enough. Shut the damn place down. Or get rid of all the staff and Gert
a decent staff there. This is I acceptable!!!
Needs inspecting constantly by a decent vet.

  22. Call it what it is blatant animal cruelty. Period motivated by greed and ego. Shameful what happened to Mongolian Groom. Preventable! These horses gives their hearts, souls and bodies to this sport and they are treated like disposable garbage bags as a thank you for giving their all.Look how many innocent horses are sent to slaughter not even named because they weren’t deemed “good enough” To me each and everyone of them has value in the millions! And to the people that treat them as disposable garbage THEY are the oned that are an example of HUMAN GARBAGE!

  23. Why cant they see this.
Why would the jepertise a horse.
People known if a horses gait is not right.
    What’s the old saying:
    “Worth more dead, then alive”

For with the latter it is at least admitted that suffering is evil and that the man who causes it is a criminal. “Until we have the courage to recognize cruelty for what it is…whether its victim is human or animal…we cannot expect things to be much better in this world…We cannot have peace among men whose hearts delight in killing any living creature. – Jane Goodall

“The Greatness of a Nation and its Moral Progress can be Judged by the way its Animals are Treated!”
    – Mahatma Gandhi

I feel so sad for the living, breathing, feeling animals that have suffered at the hands of men. I feel such anger and even hatred towards those men who would inflict such pain and suffering on an animal that wants only to love and be loved. My mind cannot comprehend such behavior, such lack of compassion. I wonder what goes on in the mind of such sick people who torture, neglect, abuse and fight animals with no sympathy or compassion for what they are doing. I do know that I feel our country has totally inadequate cruelty, abuse and neglect laws to help protect our animals. Even the states with the toughest laws could make tougher ones.

No animal cruelty law should be less than a major felony. No neglect law should be less than a minor felony, at the least. And people caught fighting animals should be locked up for life.

We are all born with compassion RECLAIM YOURS!

  25. Please remember what the impact of completely closing these tracks down will have. If you think 40 horses is horrible, wait till you see hundreds at the killer auctions. Yes something has to be done, but please do homework and tread lightly.

    • Robin Ross, follow your own suggestion…do your homework! Between 10,000 and 15,000 TBs go to slaughter now! If racing dies in the dirt, breeding will drastically decrease and, in a few years, there will be far fewer TBs entering the slaughter pipeline. How do I know? Because I understand the first class taught in business school…Supply and Demand. I suggest you brush up on the concept!

Now, I have a question for you. Should we allow other animal industries that support exploitation to continue? I like to use puppy mills as an analogy. Should we support puppy mills because of the same old tired excuse….what will happen to all the dogs if puppy mills are shut down? Please answer the question!

I have been told over and over and over that there are many “good” people in racing and they love the horses just like “family” members. If that is true, then all those “good” people will make sure that the vast majority of horses land in a good place when racing goes bye bye.

    • But wait Robin- I thought the connections all love their horses like family! And treat them like royalty! WHY would they end up at slaughter?!
Oh wait. Nevermind- most already to end up at slaughter. Even though they are β€œloved”.
