In the 5th race, “Jomelo pulled up in first turn, vanned off…fractured sesamoid bones – euthanized.” Jomelo was ten – yes, ten – years old and had been beaten and ground down for over eight years and 62 races before finally succumbing.
Prior to the next race, “Nana’s Rule [was] fractious in the gate, flipped and broke through gate, ran loose and bumped into rail, fractured canon bone – euthanized.” Nana’s Rule was four, and, like any “child,” was For Sale at $3,000 just before dying.
This is horseracing.

Seems there are a lot of issues at the gate and they appear to show that the horse is very fearful. There have been three of these gate breakouts at Del Mar this meet I believe. I imagine they know the whip is coming.
Between the shock buzzers and other abuse that goes on while in the gate and the vicious whipping they get once on the track, no wonder these horses are literally flipping out. Of course, if there was a REAL investigation into what goes on, people who might actually care about horses would find this out and do something.
Arizona horse racing, like all in every single state, kills racehorses.

Of course the usual proverbial lines from pro-horse racing individuals such as:
“We just noticed lately there’s been a lot of negative happening in our industry,” said horse breeder and trainer Stacey Campo. “We want to have our side heard that these horses are very, very are cared for.”
Lately Stacey – really?
Your vile business has been killing racehorses, both on the tracks and on the slaughterhouse floor, since time immemorial so to suggest that this is a new trend is an outright lie.
The only think that’s changed is the dissemination of information via social media.
It’s getting really hard for you apologists to hide your tortuous business practices that most often lead to racehorses dropping dead on your tracks, in the your stalls, and on the slaughterhouse floor isn’t it?
“Horses to us, they’re family, so when of them gets injured or is sick or suffers a fatality, it affects the community of racing,” said Turf Paradise General Manager Vince Francia.
So to follow your ridiculous logic, then how about you take your family member Vince dope them up, beat them to perform and then when you cripple their legs beyond repair dump them at the nearest kill auction?
Furthermore, It’s affecting many more people than you apologists want to acknowledge (not just “extreme” animal rights activists either), but every day Americans who love and truly care for animals including racehorses.
This is an unnecessary gambling venue that has no place in the 21st century – none.
To end my comment on a more positive note:
“We are here to speak out for every one of those horses that are dying in something that people are trying to call a sport,” said Dawn Shepley with Run Free Arizona. “We feel if it’s a sport, they should have a choice.”
A huge shout out to Dawn and all the protesters.
I say we send them some horseracingwrong T-shirts to wear while they are out their being a voice.
