This morning, according to multiple sources, the 4-year-old American Currency suffered a “catastrophic injury” training at Santa Anita and is dead. He is Santa Anita’s 30th track-related kill since December 30 and the 36th dead horse overall.
Because American Currency is the fourth horse trained by Jerry Hollendorfer to die at SA, and coming as it has the morning after CNN ran a decidedly negative piece with the Hall of Famer Hollendorfer as its focus, Racing has an easy villain. In fact, there are reports that Hollendorfer will not be allowed to race any more horses at SA this weekend. This, of course, is just the latest distraction (rain, Lasix) advanced by an increasingly desperate industry. Horseracing kills horses – that’s all you need to know.

Of course it was another “catastrophic injury” – that is in every day postings. Why is it that the people involved just seem to think that those 2 words are totally justified. Do you losers just not get that you are all murderers – are you that god damn stupid that you think you are fooling the rest of us?? This trainer – OMG so he can’t race any more horses THIS WEEKEND – is this for effin real – what the hell is that telling him – what is the message being sent to him?????? There is no message it is nothing but a simple slap on the wrist and another nod to the rest of the owners and trainers just to keep on having those catastrophic injuries because that makes it OK. Meanwhile this “prick” can sit back in the beer gardens and yuck it up with all of his buddies on his 2 day holiday. This god damn race track needs to be gone along with the rest of them and these ignorant owners and trainers. What the hell is the matter USA – get Trump to close them down and send these f*ckers overseas – I am thinking right now might be a good time to drop you off in Iran and let’s see how tough you are and how many catastrophic injuries you might all sustain. Death is the perfect solution to you people because apparently that is all you can relate too. What a sad sad world we live in and what a sad sad world those poor horses try to exist in!!!!

American Currency sustained fractured sesamoids in his left front ankle at the beginning of a breeze on the infield training track.
American Currency was the fourth horse trained by Hollendorfer to suffer a fatal injury racing or training at the Santa Anita winter and spring meetings that began on Dec. 26.
Santa Anita has been under intense scrutiny by local and national media and animal rights groups since a spike of fatal injuries began early this year during an unusually cold and wet winter in Southern California. Horseracing websites refuse to publish links to horseracingwrongs.com. I just mentioned this site and my comment immediately went to “approval” status, which means it was censored & removed. How can any of these people claim to want to stop the deaths of these innocent animals, when they won’t allow access to all the information and statistics that are out there? Obviously, they aren’t interested in the horrible truths. This is a threat to their bank accounts and by censoring sites like this one, they are showing their true colors. One commenter said that perhaps some horses who were dealing with injuries should be “humanely slaughtered.” Unbelievable! There is no such thing as humane slaughter, but by all means, let’s cull the injured by sending them to a grisly, terrifying death!
These attitudes are why horses are being run to their deaths. The powers that be are resisting changes and lying about too many things. And these beautiful animals continue to lose their lives. Shut this brutal sport down. Enough!

This info has hit the internet with the death of the horse this morning. Also JH told to vacate santa anita and golden gate. His horses scratched for the weekend. More coverage for horseracing wrongs as to how all this plays out.
Horse racing must be stopped. It kills horses & that is just not right.
The death toll of these beautiful horses is at an insane level. It needs to end now and the people that are involved need to become prosecuted to the full extent of the law, which should be a Felony in California for animal cruelty.

Not to add fuel to the fire but nobody has mentioned that each of these horses is insured and when they are put down there’s insurance payment that is paid out. Maybe it’s just a little too easy to collect?
It is my understanding, Vee, that most racehorses are not insured.
I agree with Cathy. Get rid of Jerry Hollendorfer period and remove him from the hall of fame. He is a disgrace and shut down Santa Anita track. These are beautiful animals. Horses are a symbol of an early American era. I am heartbroken and disgusted to think they are treated like this. They deserve a life.
There should be another special “tribute” to horseracing, a negative one – a Hall of SHAME, for bad trainers, bad owners, bad jockeys, bad tracks, etc.
I guarantee, there will be overcrowding in THIS one.
I’ve read that The Breeder’s Cup is being held at Santa Anita in November. I sure hope organizers consider moving it to another track or cancelling it.

Thank you for commenting. We are in fact the only non-profit in the country that is clearly and consistently working to end horseracing. The HSUS is not philosophically against horseracing. Again, the HSUS is not against horseracing. PETA, at least on this issue, equivocates and confuses. So the choice is clear: If you believe horseracing is wrong and cannot be fixed, please support Horseracing Wrongs.
Please don’t expect much if anything on ANY animal issue from the Humane Society or ASPCA. They pay too much of their membership funds to their CEOs and do very little on any issue. The Humane Society in particular is currently being condemned by wild horse groups for their support of truly horrendous mare sterilization proposal that the BLM wants to do. They are either bought off or don’t know anything about that issue. Both organizations have had problems with bad leadership in the past.
Don’t expect any wide-spread groups to do what people themselves need to do. EVERYBODY needs to keep protesting, contacting their congresspeople and most of all STOP SUPPORTING anb industry that needs to die.

Some of the larger Animal organizations (with much money & power) give impression they’re DOING something FOR the animals, but in truth, they remain loyal to the status quo & care very little — pay a visit to nokilladvocacycenter.org, headed by Nathan Winograd ///// to bolster my point, on another note, HSUS, ASPCA and RTF — are NOT fighting for Wild Horses, who are being harassed off their land/homes, abused & killed — Wild Horses have been successfully roaming our public lands for centuries — certain LOBBIES want the land for themselves, thus Wild Horses are being persecuted — this is WRONG — again, HSUS, ASPCA & RTF (Return to Freedom – Robert Redford on Board) are doing NOTHING — ostensibly they are FOR animals — it “seems” as if they’re on the side of Horses, but NOT SO — it’s scary, tragic, disappointing, sad — we MUST keep FIGHTING for Horses.

Good morning Pat Batuello: We were very dismayed and deeply saddened to learn that American Currency has died! This horse deserved so much better. Also Pat we are glad that that stinker J. Hollendorfer has been suspended. In our horse-loving opinion he should be saddled and harnessed and made to run the tortuous track that American Currency did. He could never give what that thoroughbred has. Also we learned via the news here in BC, Canada that Ms. Belinda Stronach was the investor in the Santa Anita racetrack activitys. Shame be to her and J. Hoffendorfer, and all the gutless wonders committing cruelty and abuse to horses.
