Another Kill at Santa Anita; Pressure Mounts to Shut It Down

In the 10th at Santa Anita Saturday, Formal Dude “took a bad step” and was “vanned off” (Equibase). “Took a bad step” is one of this industry’s euphemisms of choice for dead. And indeed, we have confirmation that the 4-year-old was euthanized – for a broken pelvis. The LA Times quotes the CHRB’s Dr. Rick Arthur: “With few exceptions, fatal pelvic fractures have pre-existing stress fractures at necropsy.” As if this somehow makes it better: “Pre-existing stress fractures” are a direct result of the incessant grinding – training and racing – racehorses are forced to absorb, and, by the way, another reason the killing is inevitable.

Santa Anita has 34, not the 28 being reported in the press, dead animals on its decidedly ignominious ledger. Shut it down.

  1. Disgusting.
I would continue to contribute to the constant refrain of “SHUT IT DOWN,” but it’s pretty obvious that they’re not about to do anything of the sort. Too bad for the creeps at Santa Anita that they’re signing their own industry death warrant with their greedy insistence on dragging out this very public equine mass-slaughter. The ballot measure to ban all horse racing in California can’t come soon enough, but Santa Anita is expediting the process about a hundred-fold.
    Bye-bye, Bloodsport.

  2. Jesus, Mary and Joseph!
    Time to close Santa Anita.
Governor Newsom – what are you going to do about this never ending carnage of magnificent racehorses at this track. 34 dead horses now – INDEFENSIBLE

    • Hope they’re mistaken, Carolyn, but I’m reading some unconfirmed reports of a fatal heart attack at Santa Anita TODAY. I’m sure Patrick is on this; these horses are dying at SA faster than the mainstream press can even publish accounts of their “accidents.”
      Sickening.

      • Kelly, you’re right about another horse dying at Santa Anita.
Patrick has just put it up.
Hope mainstream press acts on this truly unacceptable situation – it’s beyond a joke.
        SICKENING and UTTERLY INEXCUSABLE.

  3. Listen you assholes shut this shithole down the greed is so Trumpian and your following in the same dispicable behavior

  4. Do something for these horses including something about the horror trip to the slaughter house and the horror of being a companion pet. And dieing a horror death that these poor horses lay alive after being hit repeatedly by a.lead pipe then having their throat slit still breathing dieing a very slow death. Ot is proven the meat is not fit for human consumption Europeans do not allow any horse meat from america cause of the drugs in the meat. I am asking then why are our horses being driven in hell and then put thru hell in a very slow death in hell? For gods sake do something?if I had the sole power to do so it would be done. Please do something. And there are alot of horses that are stolen right off their property not being recovered everyone knows that some undesired human is stealing these horses cause they are missing one or more for their contract at the slaughter house All of this needs attention
    And full attention

  5. Enough! Enough! Ah….the bottom line…money! This is absolutely indefensible! Not only do we exploit these animals to the fullest but, without conscience. We must fight for these magnificent, innocent beings, not only for them but, for our own humanity. 😢
