Assemblymember Rosenthal (NY), Bill Maher: “End Horseracing”

Assemblymember Linda Rosenthal of the NYS Legislature has released the following statement in advance of the Belmont Stakes this Saturday:

“As we have seen with the use of animals in circuses and marine parks like SeaWorld, the days of using animals for entertainment must be numbered. Each year, dozens of young horses succumb to fatal injuries on racetracks around New York State. This is not family entertainment, as the industry would like you to believe. It’s cruel, it’s unnecessary and it’s certainly not worth a $2 bet.”

This is, to my knowledge, the first time a state legislator in NY has called for the end of horseracing. A truly seminal moment. Thank you for your courage, Ms. Rosenthal.

Then this from Bill Maher:

When the politicians and celebrities begin to see it – endorse it – change is at hand.

  1. Horseracing is a brutal criminal enterprise run by mobsters, who don’t have consciences, hearts and souls. The poor ponies are terribly abused and when they are injured, their usefulness over, they are shipped off to Canadian or Mexican slaughterhouses, hell on earth.

  4. Knew THE END was starting in earnest. Socially conscious celebrities and, yes, politicians are making it clear that they won’t take part in this sickness anymore. It’s just a matter of time now, as social media spreads the word that watching a horse race is tantamount to watching a dog fight. Cruel, disgusting, and made up of a bunch of shady characters, greedy narcissists, and barbaric lowlifes. Sorry, racing folks! Your time is up, and now you know it. Start finding another hobby that doesn’t involve abusing animals.

  7. I’m glad to see politicians, who are always so much in the public eye, start to call out the heinous abuse and callous indifference of those who profit from horse racing.
