20 Dead Racehorses in Ohio

Through a FOIA request to the Ohio State Racing Commission, I have confirmed the following kills on that state’s tracks from January to mid-May:

Skip Royale, Dec 22, Mahoning R (euthanized May 15) – “fractured sesamoid; while recovering developed laminitis and was humanely euthanized”

The Pokester, Jan 7, Northfield R – “broke front right leg – complete”

Admiral Grace, Jan 29, Mahoning R – “displaced slab fracture”

Broadway Man, Feb 19, Mahoning R – “fractured right hind pastern”

Volume One, Feb 20, Mahoning T – “fell, broke shoulder”

Burton, Feb 26, Mahoning R (euthanized Feb 27) – had prior knee surgery

Ibetyoucanwiggle, Mar 9, Northfield R – “acute collapse, heart stopped, agonal breaths, died within three mins”

New Express, Mar 12, Mahoning R – “horse fractured left knee”

Tiz Mattie, Mar 18, Mahoning R – “comminuted fracture sesamoids”

Liberty Valance, Mar 25, Mahoning R (euthanized Mar 26) – “slab fractures [both front] knees”

Patann Redemption, Jan-Apr, Mahoning T (euthanized April 9) – “follow[ing] track injury, ruptured [illegible] – developed founder in opposite leg…humane euthanasia”

Mama’s Hope, April 15, Mahoning R – “fractured and dislocated left front ankle…euthanized on track”

Southwick, April 17, Mahoning R – “fractured right knee…euthanized on track”

Caonavo, May 1, Thistledown R (euthanized May 4) – “became lame after returning to barn – [multiple] fractures”

Breakin the Fever, May 1, Thistledown R – “fell, fracturing shoulder – euthanized on track”

American Deluxe, May 8, Thistledown R – “fractured sesamoid, ruptured suspensory…euthanized on track”

Almighty Afleet, May 12, Belterra R – “slab fracture with collapse of joint integrity”

In addition, these still-very-much-active racehorses died on track grounds from what the industry craftily calls “non-racing” causes. Technically true, perhaps, but morally they are no less casualties of this vile business than the ones above.

No Excuses Please, Feb 16, Miami Valley – “hit his head coming out of the trailer…became agitated and fell in the stall…seizures…euthanized”

Sports Reporter, May 2, Thistledown – “was being treated for colic and passed in the stall”

My Baby T, May 13, Belterra – “fell on blacktop fracturing pelvis…humanely euthanized due to grave prognosis”

  1. OMG, what is going on in the horse racing industry! I don’t know that much about horse racing but I do know that many horses should not be dying everyday!

    • Bottom line: They’re TOO YOUNG! A horse’s skeletal structure doesn’t truly finish/mature until their 5th or 6th year. These babies are being broke, trained and run hard far too soon (2 and 3 year old). They’re also kept in stalls and fed high concentrates of sugar/starch. Our Creator designed them to move and eat dry grass around the clock.

  2. Every day the new postings just get worse and worse. All of the tracks are becoming just another Santa Anita in their kill zones. This is just bullshit and who do these owners, etc think they are – do they really think that everyone that reads these stories are novices to handling race horses or horses in general – well you are WRONG – we are NOT.
What kind of absolute bullshit is this about a horse called No Excuses Please – (a definite proper name for this horror abuse) – while unloading from the trailer in Miami Valley he hit his head and became agitated, fell in stall had seizures etc before being put down. Let’s just think about this for a moment because in front of me I can just see how this is all taking place – obviously from the unloading point the abuse had already started – unloading from the trailer should be a calm experience – not hitting his head and obviously hard enough for him to become agitated and the rest of the story is just someone’s desperate plea to put the blame on some problem with the horse – no way, not buying this shit for a moment – the horse was abused beyond belief to have all of this happen to him. I would suggest the whips, etc were being used in full force in the trailer to compensate for your lack of god damn ability to handle anything. You owners and trainers are just a bunch of useless pieces of shit and have no clue on how to handle an animal. You slaughtered this horse and that is the bottom line. I have worked with and taken in abused horses and have healed them back to where they should have been to start with – all they need is a lot of love and attention but they will never ever get that from you abusers at these race tracks. Your story is nothing but a very poor excuse for your lack of compassion towards this poor animal.

Then My Baby T – fell on the blacktop and fractured her pelvis – SERIOUSLY you bastards killed her that is the bottom line – this sure as hell was no simple walk on blacktop – she would have been whipped and who knows what else to have her take this kind of a fall – come on people – wake up – these race track people are all liars and abusers and their stories hold no merit what-so-ever – they are just excuses for how badly these poor horses are being treated daily. I would like to see all of you f*ckers hanging you deserve nothing better. What a shameful bunch of low lifes you all are! We need to see more owners and trainers dying every day and not the horses.

  3. Here in SoCal at Santa Anita officals are blaming 26 deaths so far this year on ‘bad soil on the race track.” They are lying. In Europe there has not been ANY deaths. In the USA are horses are loaded up with various drugs.

    • Bad soil/track surface is this industries “go to” excuse and it’s a complete lie.
Let’s for a moment entertain their ridiculous excuse that it’s the “soil,” which is the track surface.
So 1 racehorse drops dead even before the meet starts and they were blaming the track surface.
Then after their race surface guru, Petersen, gets paid an exorbitant amount of money to give the green light and to clearly state that the track surface was ok – more horses die.
So how fucking dumb do you have to be to realize that it’s not the track surface?
Racehorses have been dying at Santa Anita, all other California tracks, and all tracks throughout the U.S for years – FACT.
So are all track surfaces unsafe?
Well accepting their preposterous “go to” excuse then why in the hell do you continue to risk racehorse’s limbs, and lives by continuing to run?
Why in the hell do the politicians back-off when it comes to shutting them down?
Yet, they have no problem giving them millions in corporate welfare, taxpayers and/or casino money that would otherwise go to our communities?
If these apologists truly “cared” and “loved” their “family members,” then they would not only demand the shut down of these tracks, but they would immediately pull out of a situation that is deemed unsafe.
      It only makes sense.
As Patrick, the owner of this blog states “dying is INHERENT in horse racing,” and that’s the bold truth.
So then, as a civilized society, we must ask ourselves: “how can we continue to endorse, and permit a business that is regularly killing racehorses for an unnecessary venue?”
The answer, from any rational, compassionate person, should be “we can’t, nor will we,”

  4. Well the infamous DANNY BIRD is at it again.
The industry calls him a “trainer,” but he’s a racehorse killer.
Danny has been killing racehorses for years and it shouldn’t surprise you that he’s been affiliated with the HBPA of and on during his illustrious killing “career.”
In this round his victim is TIZ MATTIE.
How in the hell has this monster not be barred from horse racing?
He’s regularly made the Kill Lists here dating back to 2015.
Then there’s the poor DEPUTY BROAD.
    https://www.facebook.com/Ban-Danny-Bird-from-horse-racing-forever-237797719587661/
I hope that either Joy Aten or Mary Johnson can fill you in on this monster and what he did to Deputy Broad since they have direct experience with this horrific situation.
Just this one example alone exemplifies how this industry continues to fail these racehorses at even the most minimal level.
Now this is the industry that Bob Baffert, at the California Senate meeting the other day, proclaimed can “police themselves.”
This dude will say just about anything to keep this killing machine going and BB has his own long trail of dead racehorses under his direct training regimes that most of us are all too familiar with.
This vile industry condones, more or less, the widespread carnage of racehorses.
They require the maiming and killing to keep it going.
It’s merely the grease put into the wheels of the wagering machine.
It’s not only incapable of stopping this carnage, but it continues to demonstrate that it wants to continue business as usual, and it’s up to us to stop this unacceptable, unnecessary gambling venue.

  5. All these gorgeous horses DEAD due to this vile industry. These owners do not care about these horses. They care about the money these horses make for the owner.
In all these different states where are the animal police? Where are the animal law enforcement officers ? The laws must be strengthened to protect these horses.
The Govt. Officials have got to see the trend and STOP THE CARNAGE !!
    That is their job!
    Please PROTECT these horses. !!
    Paid by tax dollars.

  6. Please watch the barbaric steeplechase in England and IReland and tell me there are no deaths in Europe. Broken necks and pelvis. And there is a video of Wigmore hall being shot with a gun behind the screen.
