Through a FOIA request to the Arizona Department of Gaming, I have confirmed the following kills on that state’s tracks in 2018. Unless otherwise noted, immediate cause of death was a break of one kind or another; underlying cause – Racing itself.

In addition, these still-very-much-active racehorses died on track grounds from what the industry craftily calls “non-racing” causes. Technically true, perhaps, but morally they are no less casualties of this vile business than the ones above.

“pneumonia”

Solomon, April 6, Turf
“cecum colon displacement”

Lidy Peak, May 5, Turf
“pneumonia”

  1. Let’s try to prevent Saratoga Racetrack in Saratoga Springs, New York from adding and extra week of racing carnage to their program. Belmont, will have construction going on, and so the request is to move their slaughter to Saratoga. They want to start the deaths on the flat track on July 11th. What can be done?

    • The gamblers and the horseman’s group (NYHBPA) are complaining that they will only race for 5 days not 6 under this agreement to start early.
My only consolation is knowing that the brave, peaceful supporters and demonstrators of HRW will hopefully be out there in full force, handing out pamphlets and educating people on what goes on there.
At least they can get an early start this year – that’s about the only positive.

  2. What the hell is going on over there, you appear to be killing all your horses, does no one care in the industry,
here in England there would be an absolutely out cry, my heart is breaking for these poor animals.

    • What`s going on over here is the crummy long list of permitted medications / procedures enabling horses to run or train when they should not even be getting galloped on a track! . The always never ending grab for owners $ Unknowing gamblers always searching for the big bet payoffs on their bets. We have been there, galloping poor 4 year young This Tune Rocks when he was dead lame at a walk, but remarkably could actually gallop on the track. He was a very gentle, kind, tall horse that went trough a tremendous amount of abuse here on the west coast of the USA.

    • Actually, Muriel, it is going on over there in England, as well. No horses are safe racing, no matter where. There was just an article in the Bloodhorse last week that the BSPCA is investigating racehorse deaths for 2018, as the numbers of dead racehorses had gone up dramatically last year. I was just watching a race at Wolverhampton last week, and a beautiful grey horse appeared to have broken down and fallen. I don’t know what his fate was, as the British do not have charts like we do here. But please spread the word in the UK as well, and be a voice to the voiceless racehorses that are dying all over the world.

      • Thanks for sharing the name of the website. It looks as bad in England as here in US! Shameful!
