St. Patrick’s Day Massacre – (At Least) 4 Horses Killed on U.S. Tracks Yesterday

At least four racehorses were killed on American tracks yesterday…

In the 4th at Gulfstream, 5-year-old Coxswain “broke down” and according to multiple sources, was euthanized on the track (Equibase merely had “fell, vanned off”).

the “incident,” in the words of the track announcer, that “marred” the 4th race

A couple hours later – 2-year-old Onde Ah Mo was “pulled up, vanned off” in the 1st at Santa Anita and, I can confirm, was euthanized.

A couple hours later – 6-year-old The Truth Or Else “died suddenly,” multiple sources report, right after finishing some 80 lengths back in the 8th at Turfway.

A couple hours later – Cash Prize broke after the finish of the 7th at Golden Gate. Dead. But all was not lost – the 4-year-old “placed,” winning $13,000 for her people.

And from Friday: Threefortyfive was euthanized after “lameness [broken cannon bone] was detected a day after galloping” (Gaming Commission) at Aqueduct. Just three, Threefortyfive was already on his third owner.

That’s five more of our fellow sentient beings killed – for gambling. Enough, America.

  1. Thanks for keeping us informed. It helps keep my morale up now that I”m not into this any more.
I talked to a woman who likes horse racing and before I turned against it, she and I would discuss different handicapping systems . You help keep me motivated to be against this industry. The conformation problem in racing indicates things will not get better for the horse.
I now think most jockeys are stupidf. i still feel bad when I hear of one of them getting killed. I read Pimlico is in bad shape. Hopefully they will close soon.

  2. At least 3 of these deaths this week involved multiple horses hitting, falling, and cartwheeling over each other. How is any of this ok to the public?! They had to have been witnessed live by hundreds of people- why is there not a bigger outcry and outrage?? Why Is the betting public ok with condoning these horrific wrecks? I read this week that Ellashoo’s connections loved and miss their horse. Why was it ok to put her in harm’s way – and in the process seriously hurt 2 jockeys and possibly 2 other horses? And another jockey was sent to the hospital after Coxswain was sent out to die by his connections. People need to wake up to the miserable death and destruction at these hell holes!
