Saratoga’s Now at 12 Dead Racehorses

The ugliness at Saratoga continues, as the Gaming Commission has just disclosed the Saturday morning training death of 5-year-old Lakeside Sunset. Officially, broken leg, euthanasia. That, of course, makes 12 kills at Saratoga…

Lakalas, May 28, “collapsed and died after breezing”
Queen B, July 6, “fractured leg while breezing…ambulanced to clinic – euthanized”
Wanztbwicked, July 22, “suffered an injury while breezing – euthanized on the track”
Angels Seven, July 28, “pulled up, injury to LF leg – euthanized on the track”
Howard Beach, July 29, “suffered a fracture to RF leg breezing and was euthanized”
Positive Waves, July 29, “suffered a fracture to his RF leg breezing – euthanized”
Brooklyn Major, July 31, “collapsed and died after the finish of the race”
Marshall Plan, August 2, “fractured condylar bone while training – euthanized”
Fall Colors, August 3, “horse fell at second fence, died on track”
Munjaz, August 3, “was pulled up…vanned off – euthanized”
Lakeside Sunset, August 5, “ambulanced off; fracture right hind leg – euthanized”
Unbroken Chain, August 6, “suffered a fatal musculoskeletal injury – euthanized”

Note: Horseracing Wrongs has become larger and more popular than ever. With that, comes ever-increasing desperation from the other side. What’s the old adage – “If the facts are against you, pound the table and yell like hell”? Well, the facts – 12 dead horses on the Saratoga summer, upward of 2,000 killed on American tracks annually – don’t look so hot. In other words, expect a whole lot more pounding and yelling.

  1. We will succeed you money hungry abusers of all equine😡😡😡😡

  2. Repole stable owner of yet another victim whose name is Lakeside Sunset.
Yet, Mike Repole looks into the camera and claims to “love” his horses.
Well if this is love asshole then you are one sick SOB like the rest of them.
Dumping and dying – a necessary operating procedure for this despicable business.

  3. I was once a racing breeder and owner and left racing in disgust. Here’s what a former racetrack veterinarian stated to the NYT in 2012.

“It’s hard to watch these poor animals running for their lives for people who could really care less if they live,” said Dr. Margaret Ohlinger, a track veterinarian at Finger Lakes Casino and Racetrack in upstate New York. She performs pre-race inspections and treats horses injured in races but is not responsible for their overall care.

Dr. Ohlinger has since quit her racetrack practice.

  4. Perhaps these beautiful animals’ bones are not ready for these races! They need to wait longer before racing them!

    • Exactly! These horses are usually not ready to race..young..underdeveloped bones, etc. a horse needs at least 4 yrs. before their nones are strong enough to endure what racetracks put them thru…this is why I hate horse racing! It’s all about the $$$$$$$.
      Can’t watch anymore !

      • Banning racing in the ONLY answer.
No compromises or changes could ever be done to stop this legitimized cruelty circus, and blood bath.
It will go – it’s just a matter of time.
The overall state of horse racing is on a steep decline despite what the industry rhetoric is.
It’s on the way out, and it’s only a matter of time.
Once the handouts stop this industry will stop because it has never, and will never survive on its own.
They exploit the horses, the taxpayers, the casino operators, and anybody else they can to keep this vileness going.
It’s about time our government stops supporting a business that is not financially viable.
My heart goes out to all racehorses who lost their life this past week – too numerous to list on a post, but refer to the Death List provided herein.

  5. poor horses.the riders should be left to suffer with worse than a broken leg.the animal controll should step in and band.horse racing for good they dont disserve to be treated that way.makes me angry to see animals abused like that.

  6. This is sickning these pour horses r dien left and right come on people pull ur head out ur ass if u cant love them and protect them dont own them this is animal abuse its so wrong in so many ways after the first horse dien they should put a stop to it and any one who bets on these or watches them race r just as sick

  7. I admit, I really don’t know a lot about horse racing but what I don’t understand is how these owners can treat these extremely expensive horses like crap? I just read in yesterday’s paper about the Saratoga horse auction which pictured the horses bid at 850,000.00. Combine that with stable fees, vet bills, trainers, jockeys, entrance fees, food, its got to be pretty pricey to own and race one of these animals. Maybe these folks are so uber rich that the price of owning one is like owning a gerbil? And we all know how disposable they are….

    • They are mere ego stokers for the rich primarily, and commodities as well.
Equine insurance policies in place so when their big name trainers break them down they are at no financial loss.
When their racehorse doesn’t live up to their egomaniac desires then they are quickly dumped either covertly or into the claiming ranks.
Then they go out and buy another one, and the cycle goes on,
They even send their horses to a trainer who KILLS their previous horse!
That’s the insanity of horse racing.

  8. Could it be that these babies’ bones have not even fused yet?? You guys should be ashamed of yourselves 😪 All in the name of money.

  9. Instead of just reporting on these horses that have died, why don’t you do some investigative reporting and find out exactly what is going on up there!

    • “Find out exactly what is going on up there!” You must be new to this site. I track deaths nationwide – 2,000 annually. No mystery here. Horseracing kills horses. Support us (by spreading HW); get on the right side of history.

    • Joan, why do you think Patrick should do the investigating?
Since the horse racing business is SOLELY responsible for these racehorses dying GO ASK THEM!!
Patrick spends tons of unpaid time gathering this information, and reporting on it.
There are so many racehorses dying in the dirt for this despicable business that it’s a full time job.
Furthermore, since I’ve spent years in this business I can tell you with almost 100% certainty that the major contributing factor to these racehorses dying is liberal drug policies, and liberal reinforcement that permits multiple drug violating trainers to continue their doping regimes while multiple racehorses die under their direct training methods.
This has resulted in almost an entire foal crop most likely filled with residual drugs in their systems rendering them weak to begin with.
Then they pump them up with more drugs, train/run them on underdeveloped musco-skeletal systems at high speeds while getting whipped to push them beyond their capacity.
They are all dirty rotten bastards, and their time has come.
They have not only lost their social license, but they will lose their operating licenses, and we will get these hell holes shut down.
In the meantime, don’t watch or wager on a horse race, education, and peacefully demonstrate.
      We will get there.
It’s just a matter of when.

  10. This makes me sick. I have an old race horse, we rescued her and she is lame but full of spirit. One of her back legs was severely injured, don’t know how she was lucky enough not to go to slaughter. We dont ride her we just let her graze and be happy with her pasture mates. She hurts with arthritis sometimes we give her meds and suppliments to keep her comfortable. We have a wonderful vet he says she will let us know when it’s time. We’ve had her ten years and she is 31 years old. We’ve enjoyed caring for her, we gave her love and she gave us so much more in return that has nothing to so with money!!!!!!!! Stop the abuse, misuse and the killing for $$$$ greed!😡😡😡😡😡😡😡😡😡😡😡😡😡🤔😡😡😡

    • Donna – bless you for taking in a pasture pet and giving her a loving home to finish out her life. There are not enough of these types of homes available for these regal but injured treasures! I so appreciate you spreading the word on how wonderful and loving they are!

  11. Please understand that is a tiny number considering how many horses are racing.

    • It’s animal abuse! Are you kidding me? Any death matters! They’re not here for our greed and entertainment and then to be disposed of when they get injured and can no longer perform to our standards!

    • It’s no “tiny number,” you would have to have a very tiny mind and heart to say such a horrible statement.

  12. WTF really — investigation is needed – I would compare this to animal cruelty, and so much more – could this be that no investigations are being done because this is BIG money for the area business, and the owners of the horses…. just think about it…

    • This is not a comparison to animal cruelty Kelly – this IS animal cruelty.
The industry is self-regulated so they don’t permit outside investigations to ensue.
Hell, we have no clue what they are doing to these racehorses in the corner cobwebs of their stalls because they even keep their medication records secret.
Racehorses are nothing more than glorified guinea pigs in labs.
Deprived of everything natural to serve man’s needs.
In this case, we have gambling needs because it certainly isn’t entertainment unless you have mental issues.
It’s a well protected legitimized animal cruelty system, and they have been operating like this for years.
Thousands of racehorses have died for this despicable form of gambling and “entertainment.”
